Quinn, BU earn No. 1 seed in NCAA hockey tournament

Posted

David Quinn, a Cranston Native, and the head coach of the Boston University men’s ice hockey team has led his Terriers back to the top of the NCAA hockey ranks this season after a sub-par year in 2013-14.

The Terriers have compiled a 23-7-2 record this season, winning the Hockey East Tournament title this past weekend and earning one of the four No. 1 seeds for the 16-team NCAA tournament that gets underway this weekend.

BU was awarded the No. 1 seed in the Northeast Region, which will play its games in Manchester, N.H.

In the first round, the Terriers will play No. 4 Yale at 3 p.m. on Friday on ESPNU.

BU will look to put an exclamation point on a season in which the team has already piled up significant hardware.

As a team, the Terriers earned the regular season and postseason titles in the Hockey East, while Quinn was named the Hockey East Coach of the Year and freshman phenom, Jack Eichel, earned Hockey East Player of the Year and Hockey East Rookie of the Year. Eichel became just the third player to earn both awards in the same year, joining former NHL standouts Brian Leetch and Paul Kariya, who were the only other players to accomplish the impressive feat.

If the Terriers win their region and make it to the Frozen Four, they would play in front of a home crowd at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass. The semifinals are set for April 9, while the national championship will take place on April 11.

Regardless of whether the Terriers make it that far or not, Quinn has had a much better season than the 5-12-3 record that he coached his Terriers to in his first season behind the bench a year ago.

Cranston’s Henry earns Ivy League Player of the Week

Cranston’s Rob Henry, a former standout at Bishop Hendricken, was hitting everything he saw two weeks ago and, as a result, the sophomore was tabbed the Ivy League Player of the Week this past week.

Henry was the first Bear to earn the honor since April of 2013 and the first to earn the honor solely since 2007.

During the week that he was honored, Henry batted .563 over a four-game span, to go along with a .650 on-base percentage, five runs scored, two doubles, two triples, four runs batted in and four walks.

Brown has had a rough start to its season, sitting at just 3-11 in the standings, but Henry, who starts in centerfield and bats leadoff, has been a bright spot.

Henry helped the Hawks to a state title in his senior season in 2013, while also earning Second Team All-State honors as Hendricken’s centerfielder.

Lagasse to be inducted into R.I. Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame

Former Cranston West girls’ track coach, Sheila Lagasse, will be inducted into the Rhode Island Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame during a banquet to be held on April 10 at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick.

Other coaches that will be inducted are Moses Brown’s Dr. King O’Dell, Westerly’s Ryan Palmer and Dave Federico, Middletown’s Steve Croughan and East Providence’s Bob Duarte.
