Razzino off to hot start with D-II power Franklin Pierce

The Franklin Pierce nine are flying high on the diamond this spring, thanks in large part to the contributions of former Cranston East standout John Razzino, who is tearing up the basepaths once again for the Ravens.

After setting a single-season school record with 45 stolen bases in 2014, the ex-Thunderbolt has wasted little time in his attempt to raise the bar by already chalking up 21 swipes, including three in a 6-0 triumph against Pace on March 11.

Razzino has also been getting the job done at the plate, batting at a .325 clip, with a team-high three triples and 16 runs driven in.

The senior outfielder was particularly active in the front end of Franklin Pierce’s twinbill with New Haven on Saturday, going 3-for-5 with a pair of extra-base hits and scoring three runs, as the Ravens doubled up the Chargers by a 10-5 score.

Expectations going into the season were high for Razzino and his Franklin Pierce teammates, with one poll ranking the Ravens as high as tenth in the nation and Razzino himself was tabbed as a “player to watch” in the East Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

The hype has proven to be well-justified, as the Ravens are currently ranked fourth by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper with a 19-1 record, bolstered in large part by a season-opening 16-game winning streak that included nine shutouts.

The only blemish came courtesy of Mount Olive on St. Patrick’s Day, a 6-5 setback that was avenged the next day via a 10-1 rout of the Trojans that saw the Franklin Pierce batting order chalk up 17 hits.

Rodriguez making impact for Amcats

Cranston East graduate Mike Rodriguez is making his presence felt in his first season as a member of Anna Maria’s men’s lacrosse team, instantly injecting himself into the Amcats’ attack.

The freshman midfielder has notched a team-leading ten points, seven of which came in a 24-7 drubbing of Wheelock on March 19, that gave Anna Maria its first win of the season.

Rodriguez was one of three Amcat players to score five goals on the day, also assisting on a pair of other markers in an encounter that saw Anna Maria score 20 or more goals in a game for the first time in program history.
