Season coming to a close for Ferri, Davis

The regular season on the hardwood is drawing to a close, and a pair of Cranstonians who have taken their talents to the intercollegiate level are putting the finishing touches on their 2011-12 seasons.

Former Cranston West standout Rachel Ferri has appeared in 23 of the 24 games that Catholic University has taken part in, exclusively coming off the bench.

Despite not being a part of the starting five for the 19-5 Cardinals, Ferri has made sizable contributions for a team that has clinched a semifinal berth in the Landmark Conference tournament.

Ferri’s 49 assists are good for second on the team, while the 11-point output that she contributed in a 64-38 win against the Merchant Marine Academy on Jan. 20 was her top offensive performance of the season, to-date.

Meanwhile, for Cranston East graduate Leah Davis, her sophomore season at Simmons College has been marked by several short losing streaks, before culminating in an eight-game skid that came to an end on Valentine’s Day with a 93-24 annihilation of Fisher College.

For the season, Davis shot 36.7 percent from the field to lead her the team, and her 18 three-pointers is good for a tie for second on the Sharks, who will attempt to prevent a 20-loss season in their final game of the season against Pine Manor on Saturday.

Sawaia starts in net

Dominic Sawaia got another taste of the responsibility of being the starting goaltender for Stonehill on Feb. 8, when the Skyhawks took on Salve Regina.

Sawaia, who hails from Cranston, was unable to prevent the Seahawks from skating away with a 5-2 victory despite making 32 saves.

For the season, Sawaia has now seen action in four games for Stonehill, with a .833 save percentage and a 5.52 goals against average.
