Studio B rolls out red carpet for Perfect Prom Event

Posted

Prom season is quickly approaching and as part of a commitment to their host community, the owners of Garden City Center’s Studio B are celebrating prom season with "The Perfect Prom Event.” The event is designed as a fundraiser to help offset the costs of prom night for students at Cranston High Schools East and West.

The “Perfect Prom Event” will be held this Friday, April 6 at Studio B from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and participants can take advantage of complimentary makeup applications, henna tattoos, colored hair extensions and mini manicures. Complimentary services will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We know prom can be expensive for the kids and we wanted to help,” said Kristi Beaman, who co-owns Studio B with her husband Steve. “One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will go to East and West to help those students who cannot afford the costs associated with prom. Studio B will also be accepting donations of gently used prom dresses for the schools so that they may help girls who cannot afford to purchase a dress of their own. My husband and I both went to high school in Cranston and we felt that this was a way for us to give back to the community.”

Kristi and Steve Beaman opened Studio B in July of 2011 and since then have contributed more than $15,000 in products, services and monetary donations to both local and national charities.

About a month ago, as they were sitting with their staff brainstorming about prom promotions, Kristi recalled an article about a national charity that accepts donations of gently used prom dresses. As they continued to brainstorm, they also took into account the other costs associated with the prom including tickets, flowers, limos and more. The Beamans knew that many families are struggling due to the economy and they wanted to help make sure that no student misses their prom because of their financial situation.

They contacted the local high schools to find out what they could do to help students get to the prom. Both schools have a teacher who helps to organize dress drives and other school-based events to raise funds. “The Perfect Prom Event” will supplement those efforts.

“By giving to students who might need a little extra help to go to their high school prom this year, Garden City Center retailers have really stepped up to the plate and demonstrated their commitment to the community,” said Janice Pascone, marketing director for Garden City Center. “We are proud to be partners with our retailers and the local high schools.”

For students who attend the event, Studio B has insight into all of this year’s trends. According to Beaman, this year's top hair trends include long waves pinned back, fishtails and other unique braids, soft buns and unique headbands.

“The days of polished and tight, shellacked up-dos are long gone. Now it’s all about a softer, prettier look. Celebs like Lauren Conrad, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez are always great inspirations,” she said. “And, makeup this year is all about the classic smoky eye look paired with a nude lip and bronzed skin.”

Another big trend she has seen are bright pink lips paired with a black eye liner and lots of mascara.

“Maybe even some false lashes to amplify the look,” Beaman added.

Although young men may not be interested in hair and makeup, they do need a tuxedo and Garden City Center also has tuxedoes for the prom. The traditional black tuxedo remains a staple this year, according to Steven Ferrara, manager of JoS. A. Bank, a men’s clothier that rents tuxedoes starting at $69.

“We are mostly renting black tuxedoes for prom, but the vest and tie are all about the girl’s dress. It usually depends on what the girl wants,” he said.

Also on board for “The Perfect Prom Event” is Pinkberry, who has donated prizes as well as a bangle bar by Alex and Ani.

Tickets are limited and can be purchased by calling Studio B at 437-8688 or at www.theperfectpromevent.eventbrite.com. Studio B is located at 48 Hillside Road in Garden City.
