Suspicious white substance found at Traffic Tribunal

Business has resumed at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal after a mailroom employee found a suspicious white substance Monday afternoon.

“It was a white, crystal like substance rather than a powder,” said Craig Berke, spokesman for the Rhode Island Judiciary.

Approximately half a teaspoon of the substance was found in an envelope, and the two employees working the mailroom were brought to Rhode Island Hospital to be checked out, “out of an abundance of caution,” Berke said.

Cranston Police and Fire responded to the Tribunal, as did the State Police. Deputy Chief David DiMaio of the Cranston Fire Department said the call came in around noon Monday, and the last Hazardous Materials truck did not leave the scene until 5 p.m. Initial tests on the substance determined it was not a toxic or biological agent, such as anthrax, but three samples were forwarded to the state Department of Health.

The matter is under investigation by the state police, though Berke believes the incident was deliberate.

“I think it was intentional,” he said. “I really don’t want to comment on the nature of the envelope, I think that’s for the police to talk about.”

Business returned to normal the following day, though the mailroom and the corridor leading to it were kept closed until the final test results came back from HEALTH.

“Late yesterday, the officials on scene – Cranston Fire and other state officials from the health department – felt that there was no further risk,” Berke said on Tuesday.
