Three Thunderbirds earn All-Division honors

The Cranston Co-op girls’ hockey team failed to record a win this season, but they did receive some good news this past week, as they learned that three of their players earned All-Division honors, in addition to two more receiving honorable mentions.

Headlining the Thunderbirds’ accolades was senior defenseman Sarah Pearson, who was named a First Team All-Division selection for Division II.

“She was a leader both on and off the ice,” Thunderbirds’ head coach P.J. Bessette said of Pearson.

Two other seniors were named to the third team – forward Isabella Balsamo and defenseman Taylor Koretsky.

“(Koretsky) leads by example and always had a smile on her face,” Bessette said. “She helped play any position when I asked and never complained. She was always cheering on the new girls who were just starting out.”

“(Balsamo) is a four-year player who just started playing hockey around high school time,” Bessette said. “She skated hard from the drop of the puck to the last buzzer. Like the other two, (Balsamo) led by example through her hard work.”

Two versatile players in senior Julia Egan and sophomore Zoe Hagenburg, who can play both forward and defense, were tabbed with honorable mentions.

Pearson also received the Hobey Baker Award for her character. Hober Baker Award winners are selected based on a player’s integrity, coachability, outstanding sportsmanship and community spirit.

Mairin Heffernan, a sophomore, was the team’s recipient of the Bill Nangle Leadership Award.

The Thunderbirds will lose many key pieces from this year’s roster, as Egan, Pearson, Balsamo and Koretsky will all graduate, but they will return Hagenburg, Heffernan and starting goaltender Katelin Marandola, who will all be returning for their junior seasons.
