Thunderbirds shutout by Rams

Despite a 36-save performance from goaltender Katelin Marandola, the Cranston/East Greenwich girls’ hockey team was defeated by La Salle on Friday night by a score of 9-0.

Cailin Catarina tallied a hat trick and added an assist, while Michaela McNamara and Arianna Boscia totaled 12 points with a goal and five assists each.

In a microcosm of the season, the Thunderbirds improved through each period, allowing five goals in the opening frame, three in the second, and just one goal midway through the third.

Although the ‘Birds are still searching for their first victory, Bessette is proud of his team’s effort and attitude no matter the circumstance.

“The best part of this is that no matter how much we’ve lost by, they continue to work hard and they always have smiles on their faces,” said Bessette. “It makes it fun for me and the other two coaches because they want to learn and they want to get better.”

One of the bright spots for the former Cranston East Boys’ hockey coach has been the development of Marandola between the pipes.

“When she first started, Katelin was struggling to move side to side,” said Bessette. “Now she’s making saves that I never thought she would make and it’s really great to see.”

The head coach summed up the season best when he said, “From the start of the season, to where we are now, its night and day.”

Cranston does have some winnable games remaining on its schedule against Mount Saint Charles and Smithfield/North Smithfield/Coventry Co-op – each of whom only have one win apiece.

The Thunderbirds’ next game is scheduled for Saturday night, when they’ll host Narragansett/North Kingstown/South Kingstown Co-op at 7 p.m. at the Cranston Rink.
