Time for the U.S. Labour Party

To the Editor:

What this country needs is a new political party. A party that represents a very important segment of our society: America’s workers. A party apart from the Republican party, which is basically for the rich and the upper class. And a party distinct from the Democrat party, which at times looks after America’s workers but sometimes not well at all.

We need a party modeled after the British Labour party. A party that looks after the interests of the worker at all times. A party focused improving the working life of millions of people. The Democrat party is the party of the worker but also a party of the special interests, small business owner, and the people that benefit from government programs.

We need a unifying party the will look after America’s workers 24/7, 365 days a year. Not a party that ships jobs overseas because it helps the rich industrialist, or because it lowers the price of new cars for the upper class. We need a party that spends its time looking after you, the worker, not a party that spends its time caring for wacky, non-essential things, as is often the case with the Democrat party.

Of course, this new Labor Party USA will always be in the minority. The rich and powerful will always have the strongest voice in any society, but there are times when things are so tough for the average worker (as is the case now) that this party will be a dream come true for millions. Helping to build a worker’s paradise, not just a rich man’s paradise.

As a lifelong socialist myself I can only agree with letter writer Kevin Vealey of Warwick that American workers desperately need a political party that they can call their own. Small " socialist " parties tend to degenerate into personality cults or into bizarre ideological fanaticism. ANY political party is a VANGUARD party only when millions of working people judge it to be just that. Any would- be political leader who thinks he can ignore the reality of Class Struggle in America is useless to all our socio-economic classes.

I find it very disturbing that our Republican Congress finds so much wisdom and instruction in Ayn Rand of all people. Rand's cult classic is " The Virtue of Selfishness ". Senator Ted Cruz has read-in Congress- excerpts from her novel " Atlas Shrugged ". Nothing can be more incompatible with the UNION SPIRIT and working class solidarity than the ideological drivel of the militant atheist, Queen of Mean , Ayn Rand.

Question for you, Kevin Vealey : why should a Labor Party USA " always be in the minority ". Most Americans -most of the American voters- are working class. " Middle class " is becoming nothing more than the all American Day Dream . Unemployed " middle class " types are a few months away from living in their cars !

To Ron Ruggieri: In answer to your question. Listen to "hate radio" on wpro and other stations every day. You will find the answer why it will always be a minority party - most people listen and obey the rich and the powerful!

It sounds abstract but a fundamental idea of Karl Marx was that " social being determines social consciousness ". You simply cannot explain all the social upheavals of the last 100 years by the passivity and submission of the masses to the rich and powerful. Working class people know instinctively that the boss is not their friend, that city , state , and the federal government are far more responsive to the wealthy class than to the common people.Even Roosevelt's New Deal was motivated by a real fear of violent revolution during the Great Depression. To be sure , the mere illusion of democracy is a threat to the privileged class.. Once I heard a familiar voice on WPRO talk radio urge people who were not right wing NOT TO VOTE ..And all night long Red Eye Hate Radio rants about creeping socialism. Imagine these dreary conservatives thinking that President Obama is some kind of Marxist , that so is Hillary Clinton. I don't think they are very confident in the security of their rotten capitalist system. They are intellectually and morally bankrupt. They have one profound thought : the world in which THEY are on top is the best of all possible worlds.

Don t be too hard on the rich. They got that way by being smart, hard working and most importantly COURAGEOUS! Maybe not all the present day rich, but certainly their fathers and grandfathers were that way. Most of the people we depend on are the rich and upper class, such as the doctor or scientist or engineer. But there are times when the rich DO take advantage of the great un-washed! You are very insightful on!

The gap between the rich and the poor in this society is not explained by the superior moral qualities of the wealthy. There is a SCIENTIFIC explanation for capitalist wealth creation ( by EXPLOITATION ). I myself have always admired the COURAGE of slum landlords and the parasites living on inherited wealth.Do the productive ONE PERCENT work harder than all the rest of humanity combined ?

The Rich have always exploited the working class. The Republican party has always backed the rich in exploiting the working class. The words Socialists,Communists and Liberals are the GOP`s Smoke and Mirrors words to get people to wave the flag and take what is handed to you by the Rich.
