Toll proposal threatens state's fragile economy

To the Editor:

I am calling on my fellow Cranstonians to keep elected officials aware of our stance against the out of control monarchical occurrences happening on Capital Hill. It is our duty to ensure that our representation knows where we stand on key issues.

This proposal of tolls in Rhode Island threatens to further damage our already fragile economy, pushing more companies and jobs out of the state. I urge all of you to contact your respective House Representative and inform them that we will not stand for tolls of our highways and bridges!

Governor Raimondo is speaking publicly as if this is already a done deal while the truckers themselves have offered an alternative plan. This push back by the very industry it is targeting shows us that it will not be long before truckers have found alternative routes avoiding the tolls all together. This action by them would force lawmakers to impose the tolls onto all vehicles traveling through the newly tolled areas burdening our already over taxed population in Rhode Island.

Additionally it will have an unprecedented negative impact on the amount of people visiting and traveling through our state. Our state cannot afford a blow to one of the greatest assets that we have, our tourism. We must stop this from moving forward to save our trucking companies from potentially leaving the area, and worse seeing these tolls imposed on all the taxpayers when the trucker toll revenue falls short.
