Voting in the season of our discontent

To the Editor:

The result of the election for governor was in reality a tepid and faint endorsement of one and a clear statement of frustration by most. Specifically, with a slight plurality, General Treasurer Gina Riamondo prevailed with only 40 percent of the vote. Her opponent, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, yielded 36 percent of the vote. Last and certainly not least, the thorn in the mayor’s side, Moderate Party candidate Bob Healey, garnered 22 percent of the vote with an investment of $37 and a mere few weeks of a low key campaign.

With the Democrat and Republican spending millions upon millions in what were non-substantial and overtly negative advertising driven campaigns, voters were propelled by disdain to seek out the burly looking, common sense-talking alternative candidate.

Most likely, if Mr. Healey had not entered the race, Mayor Fung would have gained the office with a slight majority. However, what Bob Healey provided the electorate was an avenue of true protest. By casting their vote for the Moderate, every vote implored our public officials to take heed, stop squandering our tax dollars, reduce the size of our bloated and inefficient government and be wary, for we are no longer complacent with the status quo of waste and patronage. Almost 70,000 of us voiced a resounding complaint to our elected officials. We want to see a real effort toward positive change and we want you to start immediately.

I was not surprised to learn that nationally there was a record low turn out for this mid-term election. There is a dangerous trend on both the Left and Right to dismiss the quintessential democratic concept of MAJORITY RULE. Both sides are secretly content with the low turn out because they have a gut fear best described as " tyranny of the majority ". An educated, informed public has far less potential for political evil than an ignorant, deceived, manipulated public.

I could not in good conscience vote for any of the three candidates for governor of Rhode Island. But Bob Healey was indeed therapeutic ( with a remarkable 22% of the vote ) . My political values are rather well expressed by Catholic social philosophy. So I put a WRITE IN vote here in Cranston for Mother Teresa. Was it recorded ? The next two years might be an ideal time for much scorned third parties. I don't regret voting for Ralph Nader for president of the United States.
