Warwick remains Rhode Island’s second largest city, according to recently released census data, although Cranston continues to gain ground.

According to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, Warwick had a population of 81,963 in 2014, an increase of 90 residents over 2013. Cranston’s population for 2014 is estimated at 81,037, an increase of nearly 300 residents over the prior year and a little more than 900 less than its neighbor to the south.

Providence remains the Ocean State’s most populous community by far, with an estimated 179,154 residents in 2014. Pawtucket remains in fourth place with an estimated 71,499 residents.

Cranston’s slight gain continues what has been a trend – albeit a slowing one – in recent years.

As of April 2010, according to the census data, Warwick’s population was nearly 2,300 residents larger than Cranston’s.

Mayor Allan Fung made note of the new population figures on Twitter, and issued a friendly notice to his Warwick counterpart, Scott Avedisian, with regard to the license plates issued to each community’s chief executive.

“Watch out Scott … we’re looking for that 20000 plate!” Fung wrote.
