The Cranston West Falcons fell, 4-1, to the East Greenwich Avengers Monday afternoon at the Hope Road Sports Complex. The lone West goal came from Paige Ring.

The loss drops the Falcons to 0-4 on the season. It was East Greenwich’s first win this season.

“I think we really could have pressured their back line and pressured their goalie a lot more than we did,” Cranston West assistant coach James Royal said. “Even when we had opportunities, we’re not finding the net.”

East Greenwich junior goalkeeper Claire Greineder was solid in net all afternoon for East Greenwich, stopping all five shots that came her way.

The first shot from West went wide before a shot from East Greenwich’s Alyssa Gabriel was blocked by the Cranston defense.

Minutes into the opening half, West sophomore defender Ryan Nebus passed over to the captain Heather DiFazio, who dished to a charging Nicole Perreault, but the freshman forward’s shot went wide of the net.

West goalkeeper Olivia Idowu stopped a shot from junior Lucy Yu shortly after. Idowu would end the day with eight blocked shots. After a shot from East Greenwich’s Molly Souness sailed high over the net, West’s DiFazio had a shot stopped by Greineder. Perreault had another opportunity for West, but a weak roller was scooped up by the East Greenwich goalkeeper.

Soon after, Kendall Majcher, the junior winger from West, dished to Abby Souza, who passed to Abigail Royal, but East Greenwich sophomore defenseman Allison Trapani stepped in front of Royal’s blast to prevent a shot on net.

An East Greenwich corner kick was booted away by the West defense, but shortly after, East Greenwich would net its first goal when Julia Matus booted a shot from deep past Idowu midway through the first half, putting East Greenwich on top 1-0.

Later in the first half, West had a chance when Melanie Dugas set up Ring, but East Greenwich midfielder Rebecca Freeman got in front to stop the shot attempt.

After East Greenwich used the wall to prevent West from scoring on a corner kick, Matus’ shot went wide right down the other end. Seconds after a shot from East Greenwich’s Chloe Moss came up short, a second shot from Moss in front was stopped by Souza, the West captain, who was playing a little defense.

Shortly after, West senior defender Savannah Bissitt booted a pass in front of the East Greenwich net trying to initiate a shot opportunity, but there weren’t any Falcons around to capitalize and Greineder picked up the ball and kicked it away. West had another opportunity on a shot from junior winger Alayna Harvie, but the East Greenwich goalkeeper made a diving stop.

Moments later, DiFazio had a chance for West, but she got tripped up in traffic while driving to the net. Down the other end, East Greenwich benefited from a West penalty when Gabriela Daumont was tripped by a West defender, which resulted in a penalty kick. The captain, Sydney Souness, would score on the kick to give East Greenwich a 2-0 lead seconds before the conclusion of the first half.

Moments later, West had another missed opportunity when Perreault charged the net and left a pass for Harvie, who was unable to catch up to it in time.

East Greenwich midfielder Caroline Quinn had a shot denied by Idowu shortly after. West missed another chance when Souza passed in front only to have it cleared away after there weren’t any West players around to take advantage.

Kaitlyn Fitzgerald took a shot minutes later, but would be denied in front by Greineder. East Greenwich got back in the box and Daumont dished to Zoe Pellegrino, who was tripped by a West defender, resulting in another penalty kick. Once again, East Greenwich would take full advantage when Molly Souness found the back of the net, making it 3-0. Seconds later, East Greenwich got its fourth goal of the game when Matus scored on a floater for her second goal of the game.

West tried again to get on the board when DiFazio passed to Gasbarro, but East Greenwich midfielder Haley Essington swooped in to kick it away. Then, Ring would take a crack at it, but defenseman Allison Trapani stepped in front of that blast.

Moments later, Cranston West would get a penalty kick from the top of the box, but the shot attempt sailed high. Nevertheless, West stayed on the attack. First, a roller from Rebekah Powers was picked up by Greineder, before a shot from DiFazio was snubbed. West’s Katelyn Blake put a pass in front of the East Greenwich net, but once again Greineder ran out and covered it up before West could get a foot on it. Finally, just before the final whistle, Ring put one past Greineder to get West on the board at 4-1.

“I thought we played well,” Royal said. “We’re just having trouble finding the net. We’re connecting good passes. We’re possessing it pretty well, but in the end, we can’t seem to finish.”
