After earning its first Division I victory two weeks ago, the Crnaston West football team kept up its level of play this weekend with a 49-16 non-league victory over Division II Chariho on Friday night.
The Falcons got touchdowns from six different players, with running back Raekwon Kisilywicz finding the end zone on a 51-yard run and a 27-yard reception. The pass came from quarterback Steve Furtado, who also added a 66-yard touchdown run of his own.
Mazen Taman scored on a 29-yard run, Drew Watts ran it in from 14 yards out, Abdiel Mendez scored on a 66-yard run and Kurt Pinthiere scored on a 7-yard run. In total, West ran for six touchdowns in the game.
The Falcons actually trailed 10-6 after the first quarter, but opened the game up with 22 points in the second quarter to take a 28-10 lead into halftime. From there, it cruised to the win.
West is now 3-3 overall, but at 1-3 in D-I it needs to make up some ground fast. It will play a big game on Friday night at home at 7 p.m., against 2-2 Barrington. A win would put the Falcons right on the edge of the playoff picture.
West girls pick up big win
It hasn’t been a great season for the Cranston West girls’ soccer team from a wins and losses perspective, but the Falcons earned a key win last week to keep their playoff hopes alive.
West knocked off Lincoln by a 2-1 score, getting a pair of goals from Gabby Caruso to hold off the Lions. Nicole Grammas and Kate Capuano were each credited with assists, as the Falcons scored one goal in each half.
Olivia Idowu made seven saves in net
The win gave the Falcons 12 points, breaking a deadlock with Lincoln, which has nine. West’s point total has it tied for 11th in Division I, with the top 10 teams qualifying for the postseason.
No matter what happens, the race for the final playoff spots will be tight. West has three games remaining, two of which were scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday against Smithfield and Cumberland, with results unavailable at press time. Its final game is at home against La Salle, Monday at 6:30 p.m.
