Animals blessed during Defenders of Animals event at Sprague

Defenders of Animals, Inc. held its annual Blessing of the Animals at Sprague Mansion in the Carriage House this past Saturday morning.

“Anyone that has ever lost a pet realizes how deep that human companion and companion animal relationship was, and the Blessing of the Animals events bring attention to how invaluable that connection can be,” said Director of Defenders of Animals, Dennis Tabella. “It’s important that we recognize with gratitude the protectors and animal companions who have blessed our lives.”

North Kingstown resident, the Reverend Sandra Demmler D’Amico, performed each individual animal that was there as general words of prayer.

Defenders of Animals, Inc., began in 1978 and has held numerous annual events along with the Blessing of the Animals like the Homeless Animals Day/Candlelight Vigil/Humane Awards Ceremony.

“Francis of Assisi started almost 800 years ago: blessing our animals. It was Francis who first introduced the idea that human beings are only one of a myriad of creations of God and all are blessed in God’s “eyes,” said Tabella.
