The Bain Middle School boys soccer team has jumped out to a strong start to kick off its 2019 campaign, going a perfect 6-0 in its first six games and outscoring opponents 40-6.

Bain soccer has been one of the state’s best programs over the past few years, and coach Philip Nunez believes it comes from teaching the kids the importance of discipline and teamwork.

“We’ve won our division for the past few years and that has to do with the kids, the school and the environment in which they’re playing. We have tried to take kids from all different backgrounds because when you do that, it builds unity,” said Nunez. “It’s also about respect. We try to teach them three (phrases): ‘Excuse me,’ ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ When they learn that respect, it makes playing together much easier.”

Nunez and the Bain coaching staff has also emphasized learning the sport and getting the players prepared for the high school level.

“Our team is just as good as last year and our ultimate goal is that these kids will learn something before they get to high school. Once they get to high school, they will meet a totally different world,” said Nunez. “I tell them all the time that it is not about winning, it is about learning and appreciating the experience. Unity is a wonderful thing.”

Bain faced intercity rival Park View on Tuesday, but the results were not available at press time.

Members of the Bain boys soccer team include: Gavin Kilduff, Cesar Huallanca, Ruben Renden, Ansony Chavarria, Steven “Alejandro” Ogio, Chistian Gomez, Abrahan Baldomar, Herbert Silva, Aaron Morales, Frabricio Reyes, Vick Yang, Brian Perez, Carlos Joel, Travis Taylor, Brandon Natareno and Marvin Lazo.
