Smith scores three times to lead Raiders over East

Jaylen Smith, Shea’s senior star running back, rushed for three touchdowns while carrying the Raiders to a 27-13 win over Cranston East on Friday night at home under the lights at Max Read Field.

The first three scores of the game came from Smith and they occurred from distances of 27, 33, and 70 yards.

“Jaylen Smith is a special kid,” Shea head coach Dino Campopiano said. “He runs the ball well. He’s a talent. He’s definitely one of the better players in the state. We’re lucky to have him. But we also have some other guys that do some special things. So, it’s a team effort.”

Both teams’ defenses were stout early into the contest, therefore the game’s first score didn’t come until there was just 4:30 remaining in the first half.

“The defense, I thought, played really well,” Campopiano said. “To hold any team to basically zero points, until we made some changes, I thought was great. The offense is getting better and better. Our offensive line does a nice job. So, hopefully each week we continue to get better and better out there. I’m proud of the kids’ effort tonight. I thought they did a great job.”

East head coach Tom Centore felt his team competed well for much of the game, but then had trouble stopping the Raiders star back.

“Up until about four minutes to go it was an even football game certainly, but then it just got a little tough stopping Jaylen Smith, bottom line,” Centore said. “He’s the best back in the state.”

Shea’s last touchdown came on the first play of the fourth quarter, a 3-yard rush from DeJuan Hayes, a senior running back, and that put the Raiders on top 27-0.

East inched within 27-6 with 6:19 left when Andrew Amoako, a senior running back, rushed rightm for 10 yards and into the end zone.

Then with 2:33 remaining, the Bolts pulled within two scores at 27-13, following a 40-yard touchdown scamper from Jamari Bell, a junior.

The Bolts fall to 0-2 with the defeat. Next, East hosts the Portsmouth Patriots (1-1) on Friday at 7p.m.
