Bramwell Tovey returns to lead RI Philharmonic Orchestra in celebratory All Mozart program

Bramwell Tovey returns to the podium to lead the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra in a program that will inspire and uplift. The RI Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the beloved music of Mozart with a world class soloist and, for the first time ever on a Saturday Classical Series concert, members of the RI Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, who will join their professional mentors in a side-by-side performance that will leave you excited about the future of symphonic music in Rhode Island. The Orchestra is excited to renew its collaboration with Maestro Tovey, who returns after cancer treatments caused him to miss both November and December concerts.

“I have looked forward to this date for months,” says Tovey. “Returning to perform this amazing program, featuring the sensational Karen Gomyo, as well as working with the top-notch youth musicians of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, makes for a perfect celebration of the new year. I couldn’t ask for a better welcome back to this amazing organization.”

Soloist Karen Gomyo returns to Rhode Island by popular demand. In recent months, she has been around the world performing with orchestras in Toronto, St. Louis, and Geneva, Switzerland, where she took on works from Prokofiev, Britten, and Tchaikovsky. Her playing has been called “scintillating at times in both virtuoso accuracy and resplendent intonation choices” by Ludwig Van - Toronto.

This concert brings together three important pieces to create a unique all Mozart concert. Symphony No.41, Mozart’s last symphony, has not been performed by the Orchestra since 2001. Written in 1788, this piece is known as a part of the “final great trilogy” of symphonies. The Violin Concerto No.3 was written in 1775 when the 19-year-old Mozart was serving as concertmaster, conductor, and occasional soloist for the Salzburg Prince-Archbishop’s orchestra. The Magic Flute: Overture comes from Mozart’s last opera, written two months before his death. The upcoming performance of this overture will feature over 30 members of the RI Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra appearing side-by-side with the RI Philharmonic Orchestra. These student musicians hail from various towns in Rhode Island and Massachusetts including Providence, Smithfield, Warwick, Franklin and Middleborough.

“Every year, we look forward to showcasing our students in this side-by-side concert,” states David Beauchesne, Executive Director, Rhode Island Philharmonic. “Our music school offers best-in-region educational programs and partnerships which continue to evolve under the direction of Maestro Tovey. We are excited that he’s back on the podium, as we continue our work together to expand the artistic and educational scope of this great organization, and bring more great music and educational opportunities to the region.”

The TACO Classical Series concert is on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m. The open rehearsal is on Friday, Jan. 24, at 5:30 p.m. Both events are at The VETS.
