When the Comprehensive Community Action Program (known as CCAP) was first incorporated in 1964, it was created with one overarching goal: to eliminate poverty. As one of Rhode Island's largest organizations dedicated solely to fighting the war on poverty, CCAP’s expansive services cover the gamut from nutrition and health to dental, disability services, mental health services, family advocacy, educational and cognitive development (including Head Start centers and a Child Outreach Screening Program).

Today, over 50 years later, CCAP continues to grow and make major inroads through its locally-based Cranston programs. CCAP operates three child development centers in the city, including two Head Start programs for children ages three to four years old and one which houses Early Head Start for pregnant moms and children from birth to age three. These progressive centers are found at these three locations: 848 Atwood Avenue, 155 Gansett Avenue and 178 Norwood Avenue. There is always something new and exciting happening in the CCAP family of services, including a new Child Care Development Center in the works on 1725 Broad Street.

Each of these centers provides a broad range of services. The goal of the dedicated administration and staff at these centers is to mobilize all the resources available to accomplish CCAP’s mission, whether they be community-based, financial or governmental resources. They work with their hearts and souls to address the pervasive and generational problems that poverty imposes on children and their families. Nowhere is there more commitment to this cause than at these exceptional programs in Cranston.

On any given day, there is plenty of activity at the Child Development Centers. Preschool sessions begin every day at 8:30am and continue with hours of fun, stimulation, creativity, learning and nurturing until dismissal at 12:30. The program is available to families who meet certain income requirements and is totally FREE of charge. There is a small fee applied to children who need extended care at the school (7:00am until 5:30pm).

For those who are not income-eligible for Head Start, CCAP offers one private-pay Pre-Kindergarten class and two RIDE-funded PreK classrooms. These programs also offer superior opportunities for young children as they prepare for the expectations of formal schooling. It is here, under the watchful eyes of caring administrators and educators, that these timely and important learning experiences are curated.

CCAP’s Child Development Center recently received the hard-earned distinction of FIVE stars from BrightStars®, its highest rating possible. BrightStars® is Rhode Island’s Tiered Quality and Improvement system that evaluates early learning and education programs in the state and recognizes them for the quality of their services.

Many are unaware of the invaluable resource Head Start is to preschool-age children in our communities.
