Pawtuxet Village Wedding Stroll
On May 5, there will be a twist on a tradition wedding show as the Pawtuxet Wedding Stroll kicks in their fifth and final walking fashion show throughout the village with dress provided by Spark Bridal and tuxedo provided by Aldo's House of Formals. Come check out all the local wedding professionals and get entered to win a huge raffle basket. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Bring your friends, parents, or significant other.
Start out at Salon KG at 2144 Broad St. to grab your map of the stops along the way. Each store or vendor will checkmark that you have visited and then return to Salon KG with your completed map and be entered to win a wedding raffle basket, totaling more than $3,000 worth of goods, discounts and services.
The Wedding Stroll is held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will spotlight wedding professionals and village businesses. Perfect for brides, grooms, wedding party, parents, family and friends.
The Cranston Rotary will present Touch a Truck at the Garden City Center Gazebo on May 6 from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring the children so they can see, touch, climb on and explore their favorite big trucks and vehicles which will include police, fire safety, military and construction vehicles. There will also be face painting and plenty of crafts. Suggested donation of $10 per family which will support the work of the Cranston Rotary in the community.
Garden City Center is turning 70 in 2018, and a big celebration is being planned for later this year, but they need help from the public. Specifically, Garden City Center is looking for historic photographs that people across Rhode Island may have of the stores, sites and experiences they’ve enjoyed at the shopping center since 1948.
Those who have photos and would like to share them with Garden City Center can do so by bringing them to the Management Office for immediate scanning – located at 100 Midway Road, Suite 14 Cranston RI 02920 or by mailing them to the same address. Electronic photos can be emailed to jpascone@wilderco.com. Deadline for submission is June 1. All photographs will be returned.
If you need to have a child safety seat installed in your vehicle, the Cranston Police Department can help. Their Traffic Unit is fully certified to properly install your child's seat and is available to answer any questions you may have. To have a seat installed by our techs, please make an appointment by calling Sergeant James Needham in our Traffic Unit at 477-5033.
Ocean State Toastmasters will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, May 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Rd. Regular meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.
The club is one of some 13,500 in Toastmasters International, a nonprofit, educational organization devoted to the development of public speaking and leadership skills. The organization has approximately 280,000 members in 116 countries. Founded in 1963, Ocean State Toastmasters is one of the oldest clubs in Rhode Island. The RI Dream Center will be holding a Day of Hopes and Dreams on May 19 beginning at 8 a.m. There will be a 5K run/walk, and an Artisan Market.
The event will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 for all adult participants. All race participants and their supporters are invited to attend this event.
The Artisan Market will open at 8 a.m. at Western Hills Middle School on Phenix Ave in Cranston. Artisans from all around RI will be selling their homemade products. The Run 4 Hope 5K will begin registration at Cranston West High School at 8 a.m. with race beginning at 9 a.m. The first 100 registrants will receive an inaugural finisher's medal.
The Rhode Island Dream Center is an approved 501c3 non-profit agency that focuses on helping families and individuals in Rhode Island that are in need. All proceeds will benefit the RI Dream Center's many programs. Their programs include providing education, food, clothing, self-esteem building, spiritual 13-step program and much more. The market opens May 5; vendors include The Local Catch (fresh fish), Weatherlow Farms (pastured meats), Baffoni’s Poultry (fresh chicken), as well as fruits and vegetables from Pak Express, Blue Skys Farm, gC Farms, and Barden Family Orchard. Other comestibles include bread from Olga's Cup Saucer, bagels and pizza from Little Falls Cafe, honey from Fruit Hill Apiaries, nuts and nut butters from the Virginia & Spanish Peanut Company, and Bolt Coffee.
It will open from 9 a.m. to noon. The market is open every Saturday until late October and is in the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet parking lot, Rhodes Place, Cranston. Further information is available at pawtuxetmarket.com.
Please note that the June 9 Farmer’s Market moves to William Hall Library, 1825 Broad Street, Cranston, due to the Gaspee Day Parade. Farmers appreciate Gaspee Day customers because attendance is lower than usual.
State Rep. Robert Lancia (District 16) and his wife, Maryann, invite members of the community to attend end-of-the-month “Constituent Coffees” on April 28. The gatherings are held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Panera Bread in Cranston on the last Saturday each month and are meant as a forum to discuss local issues over coffee. Fun and Funny - ad-lib comedy theater which is presented by the Almanac Drops will be featured every Thursday at 8 p.m. Each performance follows a workshop with the Artists’ Exchange Comedy Troupe. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Cranston Public Library; the Cranston Public Library Association is holding a special fundraiser! Diabetes Support Group will focus on “Diabetes & Skin Care” on May 2 at 10 a.m. with facilitator Pharmacist Mario Casinelli and the URI Pharm D Students. Diabetes can affect your skin during the summer months. At this presentation you will learn what products are available for anyone with diabetes. You will also learn when it is necessary for you to seek medical treatment.

The Keep on Dancing Program will include Ball Room Dancing Lessons on Tuesdays 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for a fee of $4 per person. Line Dancing Lessons will be held on Wednesdays 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. for a fee of $2.
Make Time for Painting - “Why You Should Paint?” will be held on Tuesdays 1 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at a fee of $3 per session. Research has shown that painting can strengthen your memory, boost your creativity and help release stress. Bone Builders of RI, sponsored by The Village at Waterman Lake, will be held on Mondays and Fridays from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Senior Center with a suggested donation of $2. This innovative community-based program is designed to promote bone health and overall well-being for both men and women. Research has shown that moderate free-weight training performed at least twice a week for six months can improve strength and balance, and increase energy levels, while significantly increasing bone density. The Cranston Public Library Association's Annual Book Sale will be taking place on Saturday, May 5 at the William Hall Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. They are currently accepting donations of gently used (and mildew free) books (especially nonfiction books), CDs and LPs, and DVDs during regular business hours at the Central Library and William Hall Library. They are not able to accept magazines, VHS tapes, textbooks, or encyclopedias.
On May 12, the Asbury United Methodist Church will hold a “Big Yard Sale” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., both indoors and outdoors, rain or shine. The Church is located at 550 Fair St. in Warwick (off Narragansett Parkway/Gaspee area). Household goods, sports equipment, tools, art work, toys, books, puzzles, furniture, outdoor items and yard tools.
There will be a free kid’s clothing swap on April 29 at Edgewood Highlands Elementary School, 160 Pawtuxet Ave. Bring your clean and gently used clothing and place all clothing on marked tables according to size. Need clothes? Take what you need. There is no cost and all leftover clothing will be donated.
Did you know that beginning June 1, it will be illegal in Rhode Island to talk on your handheld cellphone while driving? It'll be a $100 fine. Bluetooth usage is still okay and it's always illegal to text while driving. Please drive safely!
