Five groups of students were recognized April 22 during the School Committee’s regular monthly meeting.

Students were honored for their achievements in academics, outside competitions and presentations, sports and music in front of a large group of families, teachers, coaches and administrators in the Cranston High School East auditorium.

The 25 members of the Western Hills Middle School Social Media Club and their adviser, Robin Ruggieri Blackburn, were recognized for their work as a part of the communications team at the school and for their presentation at the Rhode Island Department of Education’s PrepareRI Spring Summit in March.

Thirty-one students from several of the city’s middle schools and both high schools were recognized for their selection as members of the Rhode Island Music Education Association’s Junior and Senior All-State Ensembles on March 17. Additionally, music educators Gregory Arsenault, Robert Hassan, Emily Johnson, Philip Lachance, Pamela Lowell, Arthur Montanaro and Nancy Richardson were all recognized.

The Cranston High School West Division I JV girls basketball team was recognized for winning the championship at the Girls JV Open Tournament at Classical High School on Feb. 16. JV head coach Courtney Lambrese, assistant coach Rebecca Dion and varsity head coach PJ Thibodeau were also recognized.

The wrestling team at Cranston West was recognized for competing in the Freshman State Championship at Coventry High School on Feb. 16. Coaches Thomas Lynch and Chris Carbone were also recognized.

The Western Hills Science Olympiad Team was recognized for placing eighth at the Science Olympiad State Competition at Rhode Island College on March 30. The 20-person team competed against 25 other public and private middle schools in the state and placed in the middle school division. There were four students who received silver and two students who bronze medals. Technology educator Carl Gamba was also recognized.

Following the student recognition portion of the meeting, Cranston Public Schools CFO Joseph Balducci introduced representatives from the Blum Shapiro accounting firm in Cranston to present a brief overview of their findings in the financial audit of the fiscal year ending 2017-18. The audit was pronounced a clean audit with no formal recommendations.

The next meetings of the School Committee will be held on May 6 and May 13.
