On July 29, bright and early at the Park View ball fields, a charity Wiffle Ball tournament is being played to honor two ladies who have a long standing relationship and reputation within the Edgewood Girls Softball League.

Two names that are synonymous with the organization are Barbara Lawton Miguel and Joyce Shores Kuplast. Unfortunately, both ladies have passed away, but their memories and softball legends live on.

The event is the brainchild of their daughters, Colleen Kuplast and Alyssa Miguel. The tournament is being held where both women spent countless hours playing and coaching their friends and families.

Joyce passed away in 2012 at the age of 46. Barbara was 51 years old when she passed away in 2016.

“Barbara was born and raised in Cranston and never moved out of the city. Growing up in Edgewood, she started playing softball for Edgewood Girls Softball League when she was around 12 years old. Her sister Beth also played and their father Robert Lawton was very involved in coaching. Barbara played until she aged out and soon began coaching for the league with her father,” said Alyssa.

Her last year playing in the league, Alyssa was awarded the Katie Lavey Scholarship. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, accepting donations in honor of Max Paugh, will also be benefiting from the event.

“The scholarship fund is a wonderful way to remember a beautiful life that means so much to the EGSL community and to help girls going off to college. Max is the younger brother of girls that I played with and both Barbara and Colleen coached,” said Alyssa.

The tournament is starting at 8 a.m., there will be food, raffles and is being held rain or shine.
