Pedestrian hurt, suspect sought in hit-and-run accident

Police continue to investigate a hit-and-run accident last week that left a Brown University student with serious injuries.

Emergency calls regarding the crash came in shortly before 6 p.m. on Oct. 6, according to police. The pedestrian – identified as Charles Austen Deery, 20, of New Canaan, Conn. – is said to have been struck from behind by a vehicle heading south on Marlow Street while standing on the edge of the roadway filming with a tripod for a school-related documentary.

The vehicle, which police say was described by witnesses as a small silver car, then fled heading south on Marlow Street. Deery was subsequently transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.

Police said the vehicle “should have damage from the crash to the right-front passenger side, including the headlight, hood and windshield.”

Anyone who saw the incident or observes a vehicle matching the description is asked to contact Cranston police at 401-942-2211. Tips may also be submitted anonymously via the department’s website, cranstonpoliceri.com.

Police: 6,600 packets of heroin seized in search

A Cranston man remains in federal custody after authorities found him in possession of approximately 6,600 packets of heroin and 153 grams of cocaine.

Michael Bermudez, also known as Michael J. Morales, 34, was ordered held following an initial appearance in U.S. District Court last week. He faces charges of possession of heroin with intent to distribute and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.

According to a joint statement from U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha, Cranston Chief of Police Col. Michael J. Winquist, and the Drug Enforcement Agency’s regional special agent in charge, Bermudez was arrested on Oct. 6 after a search of his residence revealed the drugs.

The search is said to have been conducted by Cranston detectives with assistance from members of the Rhode Island DEA Drug Task Force. It came following an investigation into Bermudez’s alleged drug trafficking activities, which authorities say “allegedly included multiple controlled purchases of heroinb from Bermudez.”

“Due to the cooperative efforts among the Cranston Police Department’s Uniform Patrol Division, Special Investigations Unit, and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency, a significant amount of heroin and cocaine were taken off of our streets,” Winquist said through the statement. “It is our hope that this seizure will help reduce the supply of these dangerous drugs in our community as we continue to battle the opioid crisis. I commend all of the officers, detectives and agents that took part in this investigation.”

Bermudez was previously convicted of drug trafficking charges in Rhode Island Superior Court in 2015, and convicted of fraud charges in U.S. District Court in 2009, according to authorities.
