Cranston actor Lynch comes home to TBTS

Posted

Gary Lynch began his acting career while a student at Cranston High School East, starring in “Oklahoma!,” which was directed by Donald Babbit.

The Cranston native was also quarterback of the football team, while his late father was the coach of Cranston West. Hall of Famer Jimmy Lynch was a well-known and respected coach in Cranston. Gary’s 91-year-old mother still lives in Cranston, and he is looking forward to spending some time with her.

Now, after acting in touring companies that took him to every state except Hawaii, Gary returns to his native Rhode Island to join the cast of “Saturday Night Fever” at Theatre-by-the-Sea.

Gary’s acting career took off back in the 1980s when he starred in a number of TBTS’s musicals, including Tony in “West Side Story” and the lead in “The Pirates of Penzance.”

“This seems to be the right time and the right place to return home,” he said. “The stars are in alignment.

Gary now lives in West Orange, New Jersey, where his actress wife runs an acting school. (“I enjoy helping out when I’m home.”)

“I’m glad to be back after all these years,” Gary said. “There are a lot of good memories, and many friends and family to catch up with. I’m so thankful to Tommy Brent for giving me the opportunity and to director Richard Satellico, who I worked with over 30 years ago in Matunuck, and look forward to working with again.

“I’m a little too old to do the Travolta role but look forward to playing his father,” Gary said.

While Gary’s career has taken him from Cranston to Matunuck to Venice, Alaska and all over Canada and the United States, his roots remain in Cranston, and he can’t wait to get back on the Theatre-by-the-Sea stage.

“Saturday Night Fever” opens this weekend and runs through September 8, the final show of the season. You’ll remember some of the great Bee Gee songs, like “Stayin’ Alive” and “How Deep is Your Love?” For tickets call 782-TKTS.
