Rhode Island College freshman Jenna Lisi (Cranston) has been named the Little East Conference Women’s Tennis Player and Rookie of The Week for her performance in a 2-0 week for the Anchorwomen. She shares both honors with UMass Boston freshman Amy Drame. It is the second time this season that Lisi has earned the league’s Rookie of the Week honor.

Lisi picked up an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and a (6-1, 6-4) victory at No. 1 singles in a 9-0 win at UMass-Dartmouth on Sept. 24. She earned an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and a (6-1, 6-4) win at No. 1 singles in a 9-0 victory over at Castleton on Sept. 28.

She is 9-1 (.900) in singles and 10-0 (1.000) in doubles on the season.

Head Coach Adam Spring’s team is 9-1 overall and 5-0 in the Little East. In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East play at Western Connecticut on Tuesday, Oct. 1 (3:30 p.m.). Knights fall to Avengers The CCRI Knights men’s soccer team hosted the ASA Brooklyn Avengers on Sunday afternoon. ASA took a two-goal advantage past 80 minutes, yet the Knights would not quite, scoring with five minutes remaining. CCRI threatened down the stretch but could not equalize and would lose the game 2-1. The loss drops CCRI’s season record to 2-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in Region XXI play.

The Knights played the second game of the weekend today after playing Saturday against Southern Maine Community College.  Head Coach Gabe Toro was forced to rotate players especially with another game this upcoming Tuesday against Massasoit Community College.  The Avengers played Massasoit on Saturday, so they were also coming off a doubleheader weekend. 

The Knights came out with a central midfield pairing of freshmen Joshua Pineda Rodriguez (Pawtucket) and Lucas Patrone (Johnston) who was coming back from an ankle injury. Freshman Ednilson Tavares (Pawtucket) was the Knights goalkeeper today and freshman Isnaba Namusse (Pawtucket) led the defense in the back. Freshman Rodry Alves (Pawtucket) filled in for the injured sophomore co-captain Jake Leander (West Warwick) along side Namusse.

The game was tight, back and forth throughout. ASA broke the deadlock in the 16th minute to take a 1-0 lead. This score line stood for 50 minutes until they doubled the lead in the 65th minute. The Knights were playing well, but struggling the break the defensive line set by ASA. Tavares tallied seven save in net for the Knights and the four stood in front of him absorbed many of the ASA attacks.

CCRI looked to have scored after sophomore Anthony Serluca (Westerly) knocked a free kick off the bar that was later headed in by freshman Adelmo Intrieri (Westerly). The goal was called back by the assistant referee who had flagged for offside. The Knights successfully cut the deficit in half in the 85th minute as sophomore Delpio Alves (East Providence) launched the ball into the top corner.

CCRI pushed hard but could not score a second goal and would lose the game 2-1. Knights shine at Brown Invitational The CCRI Cross Country teams traveled to Stanley Park in Westfield, MA Sunday morning to compete at the Brown Bear Invitational hosted by The Brown University Running Club.

Three of the four CCRI runners put forth season best times on the course at Stanley Park. For the Lady Knights women Ashley Lawrence (Barrington) ran a season-best for the six kilometer distance placing 58th in a time of 31 minutes 34.4 seconds.  Maddie Holden (North Kingstown) placed just behind Lawrence in 59th in a time of 31:35.6.

For the Knights both men who raced in the eight kilometer event ran season-best times. Gavin Kearney (Coventry) placed 127th in a season-best time of 36:25.3 and Brandon Bun (Pawtucket) placed 134th in a season best time of 37:54.6.

Head Coach Gregg Cornell commented after the meet, “Nice efforts by the four athletes in their second race of the season. They look forward to racing at home this coming weekend at the Tri-State Invitational.”

The next meet for CCRI will be Saturday the 5th when they host the Tri-State Invitational beginning at 10am on the CCRI Flanagan Campus in Lincoln, RI.
