Cranston Hall of Fame deadline approaches

The Cranston Hall of Fame is looking for submissions for the 38th class of inductees. Deadline for submissions is April 18.

The Induction ceremony will take place on Nov. 2. All details about how to nominate a candidate and facts about the Hall of Fame can be found at www.cpsed.net, under the community tab.

Deadline approaching for Cranston Police Citizen’s Academy

Are you interested in learning about law enforcement? If you answered "yes" then the Cranston Police Citizens' Academy may be for you! 

One night a week for approximately two months, the CPD Training Division will provide this unique opportunity to a limited number of people. If accepted, you will take part in classroom presentations and have the chance to participate in police scenario training. Through these experiences and classroom conversations, you will gain a better understanding of law enforcement. 

To be considered, you must be at least 18 years old and must complete the electronic registration form. Upon completion, you will be contacted by a member of the Cranston Police Training Division. Applications are being accepted through March 30 and the academy is scheduled to be held each Tuesday from April 17 through June 12. Registration forms can be found at cranstonpoliceri.com.

City summer jobs applications date announced

The Parks and Recreation Department will make available summer job applications from April 2 to May 4. Applications will be available for download on the Parks and Recreation website and for pick up at the Recreation Office. Applicants must Cranston Resident and be 16 years old at the time of employment. Forms should be submitted to the Parks and Recreation Department. 

Positions include Camp Counselor, Lifeguard, Pool Attendant, Pool Maintenance.

This is for new applicants only. Last year's summer employees in good standing with the department will receive a re-application form in the mail in the coming weeks.

Easter Egg Hunt at the Y

Cranston YMCA will host their 6th Annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 24. Sessions are held at 9:30 a.m., 10 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. that day. Festivities will include Pictures with the Easter Bunny. The event is open to YMCA members and the public. For more information and to register call 943-0444.

CPL Book Sale seeking donations

Got books? They need your help with the Cranston Public Library Association's May 5 book sale. Help them to continue this tradition by donating your gently-used (and mildew-free) items to the sale. They are currently accepting donations of books (especially nonfiction books), CDs and LPs, and DVDs during regular business hours at the Central Library and William Hall Library. They are unable to accept magazines, VHS tapes, textbooks or encyclopedias.

Temple Sinai Trivia Night

The event will be held on April 7 at 6:30 p.m. with a light supper with a variety of delicious veggie pizzas, calzones and salad will be available at that time and throughout the evening. Dessert and coffee will be served around 8 p.m. The event is BYOB. Babysitting is available. 

The trivia master will begin the game at 7 p.m. He is an experienced professional who has equipment with a big screen on which to display the questions, which are mostly in the category of general knowledge.

Friendly competition is one element of this enjoyable game. Of course, you get points for correct answers, but there is a twist…you have points deducted for incorrect answers. You might be in first place one minute, and, just a few minutes later, you get the next question wrong and you will be in last place. Lots of fun.

Tickets are $15 prior to April 3 and $20 after that date or at the door. If you have a team of eight and provide advance payment for each team member, you can reserve a table. If you do not have a team of eight, you will be seated wherever you choose, and your random tablemates will become your team.

Rhode Island Statewide Business After Hours

The Rhode Island Statewide Business After Hours will be held on March 27 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Rhodes-On-the Pawtuxet, 60 Rhodes Place in Cranston. 

Expand your business network at this annual statewide event, which includes participants from more than 12 area chambers of commerce. Upwards of 800 business professionals are expected to attend. The event will feature 125 table-top displays, cash bar, delectable hors d'oeuvres provided by Russell Morin Catering & Events and all that Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet has to offer.  

Admission is $15 per person and contact the Cranston Chamber of Commerce at 785-3780 or your local participating Chamber of Commerce.

Spring Concert Series at the Hall

Cranston Public Library is welcoming the spring season with the return of its annual Spring Concert Series at the William Hall Library. The series will run on selected Saturdays from March-May and will feature local musicians. Concert performances will take place in the William Hall Library Auditorium on March 24, April 7 and May 12 from 2 to 3 p.m. and are free and open to the public. 

The series begins on March 24 when Atwater-Donnelly (American Traditional & Celtic Music) will perform. Based in Warren, they have traveled extensively for 30 years to perform, and this highly praised husband-wife duo blends gorgeous vocals with an astounding array of instruments including the mountain dulcimer, old-time banjo, tin whistle, guitar, mandolin, harmonica and more.

Girls Night Out

Girls Night Out-Crystals & Cocktails to benefit the Cranston Animal Shelter will be held on March 29 at The Nelson Event Center, 225 Niantic Ave, Cranston. The event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. 

The Nelson Event Center at Lang's Bowlarama is a beautifully renovated mid-century modern space.

Enjoy hanging out with friends, have a drink or two and create your very own suncatcher. Tickets are $30 per person. Included is one drink (beer, wine, or a well drink), your suncatcher with a small crystal and lots of fun!

At the Senior Center

The Michael A. Traficante Enrichment Center, located at 1070 Cranston St. will offer the following programs and activities:

Book Club which will meet on March 27 at 10:30 a.m. and features “Me Before You” by Jojo Moyes. A heartbreakingly romantic novel that brings two people together who have nothing I common.  This book is worth a read and then a discussion.

Chiropractic Natural Health - “Signs, Symptoms & Causes” will be held on March 28 at 10 a.m.  Dr. Ron Tyszkowski, Chiropractor/Functional Specialist) will lead the discussion. Not feeling your best?  Need relief from nagging back, neck, and leg pain?  Out of sorts?  These are all health issues that fall under chiropractic medicine.  Dr. Tyszkowski is highly trained in managing these health issues ad would like to share his experiences with you.

“Potential Pitfalls of Reverse Mortgages” is the topic at the Senior Center on April 5 at 10 a.m. Provided by: RI Bar Association Legal Information & Referral Service, reverse mortgages are a powerful tool that can help you access a portion of your home equity and convert it into cash to supplement a fixed income. There are pros and cons to this program. It all sounds great but there are pitfalls. At this presentation you will learn the truth about common misconceptions of reverse mortgages.

A Matter of Balance will be held on Mondays (beginning April 6) and Fridays (ending May 11 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Senior Center. “Managing Concerns About Falling” is a big issue in the senior life. Many people think falls are a normal part of aging.  The truth is, They’re not!  Most falls can be prevented – and you have the power to reduce your risk of falling.  How?  Sign up now for our evidence-based program A Matter of Balance. The Arthritis Foundation will present “Walk With Ease” Program which will begin on April 17 at 10:30 a.m. with orientation. The actual walking program begins on April 21 and ends June 1 on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays at 10 a.m. Need relief from arthritis pain or just want to be more active?  Come join this fun group.  Three mornings a week for six weeks we will walk the Cranston High School West Walking Track.  Check in at 9 a.m. Transportation provided from the Center if needed. Call now to register at 780-6000.

New Hope Art Gallery Spring Show

The New Hope Art Gallery Spring Show opening is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27 from 4 to 7:30 p.m. The show will feature 400 pieces of art in every style and media from 100 local, national, senior, special needs and student artists.

The will feature vender tables of small original art items all at affordable prices from many of our artists. Also featured will be wonderful music from Jim Chapin, Mark Greenwood, Robert Rizzo and friends. Artist Jack Lai will be creating free portraits for guests. Come join in for a great night of beautiful art, great music and good food. The gallery is located at the Michael A. Traficante Enrichment Center (Senior Center) at 1070 Cranston St. This show will run for 3 months until early July. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Free self-defense seminar

On March 24, there will be a free self-defense seminar, at Bochner's Self-Defense Studio, 855 Dyer Ave. in Cranston from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Ages 10 through adult are welcome to join in.
