The Rhode Island Dream Center is an approved 501c3 non-profit agency that focuses on helping families and individuals in Rhode Island that are in need. All proceeds will benefit the RI Dream Center's many programs. Their programs include providing education, food, clothing, self-esteem building, spiritual 13-step program and much more. The Cranston Fire Department has 250 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm detectors ready to install in homes across the city. The alarms have a sealed 10-year battery. Lt. Registration for Cranston children, born on or before September 1, 2013, has now begun. It will be held in the Student Registration Office, 1196 Park Ave. from 8:30 a.m. through 2:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Registration is by appointment by calling 270-8150. Garden City Center is turning 70 in 2018, and a big celebration is being planned for later this year, but they need help from the public. Specifically, Garden City Center is looking for historic photographs that people across Rhode Island may have of the stores, sites and experiences they’ve enjoyed at the shopping center since 1948.
Those who have photos and would like to share them with Garden City Center can do so by bringing them to the Management Office for immediate scanning– located at 100 Midway Road, Suite 14 Cranston RI 02920 or by mailing them to the same address. Electronic photos can be emailed to jpascone@wilderco.com. Deadline for submission is June 1. All photographs will be returned.
Join the Cranston Arts Commission and the Cranston Public Library for a photo exhibit, entitled "Through the Lens of Cranston Artists" which will feature the art of 9 Cranston photographers. Michael Benjamin, a second-grade student at George J. Peters Elementary School, needs an autism service dog to keep him safe. A Pasta Dinner will be held on June 2 from 2 to 8 p.m. The event will be held at Legends Pub & Grub, 1458 Park Ave. There are no advance tickets as payment is accepted at the door. On the menu are spaghetti and meatballs, salad and dessert. Beverages will be available for purchase. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children. All money raised will help pay the cost of the autism service dog. There will also be raffle items and a 50/50 raffle.
The Walldogs are a group of highly skilled sign painters and mural artists from all over the globe that descend upon one town a year to visually transform it via exterior, large scale wall murals. Picture a “pack” of talented artists descending upon Cranston to paint the most beautiful murals you can imagine. Every wall that a Walldog touches springs to life with images of local places, people, and products that have historic significance to each town.
Westerly was the first town on the Northeast to hold this very successful Walldog event named “Bricks and Murals” and demonstrated the power of a town coming together to build community, boost economy, tourism and improve the town’s esthetic.
Cranston can be the second town on the Northeast to hold this lively event. Westerly’s team has graciously agreed to visit Cranston and share their amazing experience with us, as well as advise us how to create our own event.
They will meet at the Artists’ Exchange, 50 Rolfe Sq. on May 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. At 6 p.m. there will be a reception, gallery opening and refreshments. Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served. Mingle with presenters and guests while viewing Westerly’s Murals on display in the art gallery.
At 7 p.m. there will be a presentation by Westerly’s Bricks and Murals team, featuring Walldog, Cam Bortz. RSVP to elaine.yeaw@artists-exchange.org.
State Rep. Robert Lancia (District 16) and his wife, Maryann, invite members of the community to attend end-of-the-month “Constituent Coffees” on May 26. The gatherings are held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Panera Bread in Cranston on the last Saturday each month and are meant as a forum to discuss local issues over coffee. The Cranston Public Library 50th anniversary celebration continues with an open house at the Auburn branch on Saturday, June 2 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. There will be a scavenger hunt, create our own magnet and bookmark craft, book sale, and raffle. Refreshments will be served. There will be also be a historic photo slideshow which celebrates the long history and many locations of the Auburn Library which was founded in 1888. CPL will be holding open houses at our branch locations throughout the year.
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, there will be a ‘Memorial Day Service of Remembrance’ at the Bethany Cemetery on Hamilton Road in Cranston. The service, meant to remember those who have given “the last full measure of devotion,” will be held at 10:00 a.m.
The popular on-demand film streaming service Kanopy is now available for free at the Cranston Public Library to all Cranston Public Library cardholders. Kanopy offers a broad selection of more than 30,000 films including quality documentaries, feature films, foreign language films and training videos from producers including PBS, BBC, The Criterion Collection, The Great Courses and thousands of independent filmmakers. Films can be streamed via cranstonlibrary.kanopy.com or by downloading the Kanopy mobile app for iOS, Android, AppleTV, Roku or Chromecast.
With the motto of "thoughtful entertainment," Kanopy provides Cranston Public Library patrons with access to films of unique social and cultural value; films that are often difficult or impossible to access elsewhere, and programming that features diversity, with a wide array of foreign language films and films on race, and current affairs.
Cranston Library cardholders are entitled to eight checkouts per month. Each checkout is active for a three-day period. There are no overdue fees and your checkout balance resets on the first of each month. Bone Builders of RI: “Promoting bone health & well-being” is a twice weekly exercise class for ages 55 and is held on Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m. and Thursdays 9 to 10 a.m. Suggested donation is $2. The Cranston Historical Society will join the RI Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Elisha Dyer Camp No. 7 (the historic and legal descendant of RI Grand Army of the Republic Arnold Post No. 4) at Pocasset Cemetery on May 30, at 6 p.m., to commemorate the 150th Anniversary or Memorial Day Sesquicentennial. General Logan's General Order No. 11, issued on May 5, 1868 stated Memorial Day was created, "for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country." There are more than 300 Civil War veterans buried at this cemetery along with Medal of Honor recipients.
Memorial Day, according to biographer Gary Ecelbarger, may be the most noteworthy tradition of observance in America. Memorial Day is not a holiday celebration, it is a day of solemn observance created to honor the passing of all American Veterans.
At the end of the traditional Pocasset Cemetery ceremonies, a GAR poem is read by a member of Camp 7. Several times the poem asks, "Who will carry on when the boys in blue are gone.” Each time the question is asked, all the members of Camp 7 shout, "We will!”
The public is invited to join the solemn, meaningful and memorable procession through the cemetery this year as the graves of Civil War Veterans are honored.
Memorial Day is upon us. The holiday was long known as Decoration Day for the practice of decorating graves with flowers, wreaths, and flags. The name Memorial Day goes back to 1882, but the older name didn't disappear until after World War II. Federal law declared "Memorial Day" the official name in 1967. In 1971, the Monday Holiday Law shifted Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday of the month. (Source: Memorial Day Facts)
