Several Cranston residents and parishioners received honors during the Diocese of Providence’s Catholic Youth Ministry and Scout Awards Celebration held earlier this month.

Richard W. Conard Jr. received the 2019 St. George Emblem, which is awarded through the National Catholic Committee on Scouting. According to the diocese, the emblem given to those “who have made significant and outstanding contributions to the spiritual development of Catholic youths through Scouting.”

Conard has been involved in Scouting for more than 50 years. An Eagle Scout, he has served as an adult leader for Troop 6 Cranston. He is a campmaster at Yawgoog Scout Reservation and a member of the Narragansett Council’s Eagle Scout Board of Review Board.

Julie Bradley of St. Paul Church in Cranston, Maryann Johnson of Holy Apostles Church in Cranston and Carol Smith of St. Matthew Church in Cranston received the Companions on the Journey Award, which the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry presents for excellence in Catholic Youth Ministry. They were nominated by the Rejoice in Hope Youth Center, Deanery VI of the diocese and Mount St. Charles Academy, respectively.

Christian Adams of St. Paul and Michael Stabile of Holy Apostles received the St. Timothy Award, which is given to outstanding high school juniors and seniors for their faith, leadership and example. Both were nominated by Deanery VI.

“This award from the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry is the highest honor a diocese may present to a Catholic youth,” according to information from the diocese.

The Ad Altare Dei Emblem, which is granted to Catholic Scouts in recognition of their study of the seven sacraments, was awarded to Troop 66 Cranston’s Gianni Ciccarelli, a parishioner at St. Mary’s Parish in Cranston, and John Zukowski, a parishioner at Holy Apostles.

The event was held March 3 at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence. The Most Rev. Thomas J. Tobin, bishop of the Providence Diocese, served as the day’s celebrant and homilist.
