Stephanie Culhane, who has served on the Cranston School Committee for more than a decade, will step down from her seat before the committee’s next meeting.
During Monday’s meeting of the committee, Culhane said she is moving out of Ward 2 in the beginning of August.
She said the move is one of necessity rather than choice, and that while she considered pursuing what avenues might be available to maintain her seat, she ultimately chose to depart the committee. She also said she had not planned to seek reelection in 2020.
“I’ve given 11 years to this district proudly, and watched such great turnaround from really desperate times where we had to make some really painful cuts … we’ve come full circle in bringing everything back, even better than it was before,” she said.
She added: “I’m proud to say that the committees that I’ve sat on have done really great work.”
Since Culhane’s departure comes more than six months after the most recent election, her seat will be filled through an appointment. She said she has spoken with Chairman Dan Wall regarding potential candidates.
Citywide representative Michael Traficante said he has known Culhane for decades.
“You have served extremely well the constituents of Ward 2 … You can walk away from this job with your head held high,” he said.
