The Cranston East Lady ’Bolts were overwhelmed by the St. Raphael Academy Saints, 57-34, on Monday afternoon in Pawtucket. East senior standout Maia Caito led all scorers with 14 points, and her teammate, Sofia Morel, chipped in nine. For St. Ray’s, junior Monet Gailloux and freshman Amaya Dowdy each had 13 points, and Tatum Forbes, also a freshman, followed with 12.

“I think the speed and athleticism of them was a problem for us,” East head coach Frank Kiser said. “We didn’t match up well with that speed. We kind of fell behind a little bit in the first half and had a tough first couple of minutes in the second half, but I thought we played well after that. It’s a work in progress. We’re a young team, so we’ve got a lot of things to learn, a lot of things to improve on, but the effort level’s been pretty good.”

The ’Bolts jumped out to a 4-0 lead when Morel made a couple of free throws and Caito followed with a layup.

However, St. Ray’s went on a 17-0 run after that. First, Gailloux hit a hook shot plus a freebie, and then Elizabeth Bruno buried a jumper and put St. Ray’s up 5-4. Next, Dowdy and Bruno each scored a putback and Forbes followed with a runner. Finally, Kaylee Mulligan hit a layup, and Paige O’Brien capped the spurt with two free throws.

East point guard Hope Halvarson ended the drought with a 3-pointer and pulled the ’Bolts within 16-7 with five minutes remaining in the half.

Then, St. Ray’s got a basket from freshman Tatyana Vicente and back-to-back buckets from Forbes and went up 22-7. Then, Halvarson buried another trey for the ’Bolts and got them within 22-10.

After that, Bruno buried a jumper and Caito answered with a layup, and that gave St. Ray’s a 24-12 lead going into halftime.

Dowdy started the second half with a turnaround jump shot, and then Caito responded for East, making it 26-14.

The ’Bolts pulled within 10 when Izzy Ferry passed inside to Morel for a layup.

However, St. Ray’s padded its lead when O’Brien made a corner 3, and then Forbes and Dowdy each scored buckets and put their team up 35-18 with 12:37 remaining.

With 10 minutes remaining, St. Ray’s took a 41-20 advantage on points from Dowdy, Forbes and O’Brien. Two and a half minutes later, Gailloux put a high floater off the glass, and Mulligan made a layup and increased St. Ray’s lead to 51-26.

Then, East began to cut into the deficit. First, Morel sank a turnaround jumper plus a pair of free throws. Then, Angelina Ortiz scored with a putback, and Caito added a jumper and pulled the ’Bolts within 51-34.

Nevertheless, St. Ray’s would close the game on a 6-0 run.

With the defeat, East falls to 3-5 in the league and St. Ray’s improves to 4-4.
