East rolls past Central, 9-1

The Cranston East Lady Bolts pummeled the Central Knights 9-1 on Monday afternoon at Cranston Stadium during a Division III girls soccer showdown.

East was led by its senior midfielders in Hope Halvarson, who tallied two goals and two assists, and Reagan Rojek, who added a goal and two assists.

Another sniper stealing the show was newcomer Alany Avila, a midfielder, who netted two goals.

“She works hard up top,” East head coach Scott Maynard said. “She’s a freshman. So, she’s one of my swing players. So, we are deep this year. We only graduated two girls from varsity last year. And therefore we had the whole team coming back. So, we’ve been able to really work on the style of play we want and the freshmen have fit in pretty seamlessly.”

Also coming up big on offense for the Lady Bolts on Monday was Savana Lavimodiere, a sophomore, and Phoebe Herriott, a senior, who had a goal and an assist apiece, while juniors Abigail Cahill and Jaelyn Vallee, contributed a goal each.

East got off to a slow start but picked up steam as the game progressed.

“Central was very aggressive to the ball and we were tentative for the first 10 or 15 minutes,” Maynard said. “And then once we settled down, we were able to move the ball against them. So, I was very pleased with our ball control and our ball distribution. And what I liked is we had many people score, which is great in terms of distributing the ball.”

In goal for East was Zasia Barron, a junior, who stopped two shots.

“She’s been doing a great job for us,” Maynard said. “And unfortunately the one goal they scored was a positioning thing more than a hands thing. So, we’ll continue to work on that. But she’s been playing great in net. She communicates very well back there, which has been very helpful.”

Central senior Josseline Saravia made ten saves for the Knights.

With the win, East improves to 3-1 on the season. The Lady Bolts host Central Falls (1-2-1) next on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m.
