Falcons power past 'Bolts

For the Herald The Cranston West Falcons dominated the Cranston East Thunderbolts, 10-1, on Tuesday evening on senior night for both teams. The game was played under the lights at Cranston Stadium.

Hayden Parkes looked strong again, going six innings while yielding just three hits. The senior righty had five strikeouts and five walks with two hit batsmen. The lone run came on a passed ball at home plate.

“He was throwing a breaking ball for strikes early on,” West head coach Rob Malo said. “I think his last start (against East), he was more fastball, changeup, this time he was throwing fastball, changeup, curveball, so, throwing three pitches for strikes just makes the other two that much more effective.”

East head coach Mike Walsh’s squad couldn’t get much going all night versus Parkes.

“He pitched well and we just didn’t come up with any big hits when we had runners on base,” Walsh said. “He made the pitches when he needed to.”

Chrisdione Mendez pitched for East but had issues getting the ball over the plate. Mendez allowed five earned runs while giving up 10 hits on four walks and three strikeouts.

“I just think he was behind a lot of hitters,” Walsh said. “He walked too many guys. He didn’t throw strikes consistently.”

After Mendez got Nik San Antonio to fly out, he walked Sam Franco. With two outs, Mendez threw four straight balls to Mike Doire. With runners at first and second, Mendez escaped the inning unscathed when he struck out Brett Traficante.

In the bottom of the inning, Parkes suffered a minor hiccup before getting rid of East. First, he walked the leadoff hitter, Jacob Frost. It wouldn’t matter, though. Just seconds later, Parkes picked off Frost, who was leading off of first base. Next, Parkes struck out Justin Neary. Then, Alejandro Martinez popped out to the third baseman, Dan Smith.

In the top of the second inning with one out, Matt Malo battled out a single with a hit to the shortstop. Mitchell Carvalho then moved Malo to second with a fielder’s choice. Next, Steve Piscopiello hit a rocket to the gap in center field for an RBI triple, giving West a 1-0 edge. Mendez got out of the top of the inning when he got Martinez to pop out to him.

In the third inning, Mendez started off with back-to-back walks to Franco and Lonardo. Then, Mendez struck out both Doire and Traficante. After Smith got a hit to load the bases, Andrew Spirito hit a bomb to right center for a 3-RBI double to give West a 4-0 advantage. Carvalho then hit a single, and it was followed by an error at home plate that scored Spirito to put West up 5-0.

In the bottom of the inning, East’s Noel Bianco led off with a hit into the gap for a double. Then, after Parkes got Steve Ellis out on a fielder’s choice at first, East would have a runner on third with one out. Robenson Antoine then walked to put runners at the corners. Nonetheless, Parkes would get Frost to pop out before getting Neary to fly out to right to avoid the threat.

In the top of the fourth, West’s San Antonio hit a leadoff double. With one out, Matt Lonardo hit an RBI single to score San Antonio and put West up 6-0.

In the bottom of the inning, Parkes struck out Martinez. Next, Parkes got himself into a little trouble when he hit Jake Palazzo. Next, Anthony Ramos hit a single. Parkes then hit Marcos Badia to load the bases. However, with one out, Parkes struck out Blanco before inducing Ellis into an easy groundout for the final out.

West held a 6-0 lead heading to the fifth inning. Smith hit a single off Mendez to start things and Spirito followed it with a single of his own. Then, Carvalho joined in with a single.

East then elected to bring in reliever Zach Heald, hoping that he could get it out of the bases loaded jam. Soon after, Franco came through with an RBI single to put West up 7-0. Heald then beat Lonardo to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Parkes started by getting Antoine to line out to the third baseman, Smith, who made a diving catch for the first out of the inning. Next, Parkes walked back-to-back batters. However, Parkes lured Martinez to fly out to center and then he struck out Palazzo to escape the threat and end the fifth frame.

In the bottom of the sixth, Parkes walked Ramos to begin things. Then, Badia got a hit. Next, Parkes induced Blanco into a double play. On a passed ball, Ramos scored from third to give East its first run, cutting the deficit to 7-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, Blanco came on to pitch. He started off by walking Malo. Next, he hit Mike Cuddemi. Then, Dave Cushman hit an RBI single and scored Malo to put West up 8-1. Cushman scored after San Antonio hit into a force out at second. Then, Franco hit a single up the middle. Next, Lonardo came up with an RBI double to increase the West lead to 10-1. With runners at second and third, Blanco came up with back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Connor Kiernan came on to finish pitching the game for West.

Frost hit a single up the middle to start. After Neary flied out, Martinez got on with a walk. With runners at first and second, Palazzo hit into a fielder’s choice, with West getting the runner at second for the second out. Then, Kiernan ended the game with a strikeout of Ramos.

The ‘Bolts would get back on track with a three-game winning streak following their loss to the Falcons. East beat Coventry, St. Ray’s and Middletown during that stretch to improve to 7-8 in D-I. Next up for East is its final home game of the season against North Providence on Monday at 3:45 p.m.
