Ed Garcia elected to American Library Association Executive Board

The Cranston Public Library (CPL) announced that library director Edward Garcia has been elected to the American Library Association's (ALA) executive board.

The board consists of the president, president-elect, immediate past president, treasurer, executive director, and eight members elected by the ALA Council from its membership for three-year terms.

Garcia has been library director since 2012 and has served on the Library Board of Rhode Island for the past 10 years.

The American Library Association is a nonprofit organization based in the United States that promotes libraries and library education internationally. It is the oldest and largest library association in the world. The Executive Board provides leadership and vision for ALA and its 58,000 members.

“2018 is my 10th anniversary of becoming a librarian,” Garcia said. “Our profession awoke a passion for public service that I didn’t know I had. Being a member of ALA has helped me focus that passion. I have gotten so much out of my involvement in ALA, that I want to give back my time, energy & skills in helping our organization.”

Elections took place at the Annual ALA Midwinter Conference in February 2018. The new members will officially join the Board in July 2018.
