Edgewood cheer takes home title at nationals

The Edgewood cheerleading program made the trip to Florida for nationals recently and shined as it went against some of the top teams in the country.

Three of the six Edgewood teams qualified, and were led by the Varsity Level 3 team that took first place. Pee Wee Level 1 went on to finish in second, and Varsity Level 1 took fourth overall.

“Any success for us is special. These kids could choose other sports, other teams or even high school sports, yet they choose to stay with us until they age out. Many  have been together since the start of their cheer career. They work hard season after season and always come back stronger. Our athletes, parents and coaches fully commit to the Edgewood Eagles program,” said Shanika Doctor, head of Edgewood cheerleading.

Doctor was proud of the program’s success this past year, and hopes that each cheerleader will take this experience with them throughout their lives.

“We at Edgewood know that our children are champions. Although it's always nice to come home with a trophy, it's really the success of our kids outside of this program that makes this league the proudest, the life lessons, the college degrees they attribute to lessons learned through Edgewood,” said Doctor. “The amount of kids returning to coach, the positive messages we hear year after year. The trophy is just a symbol of that work ethic that carries on long after they graduate the program.”
