Eleni, Nicole Grammas shine at Springfield Opener

The Rhode Island College women’s track & field team took home first place in three events as the team competed at the Springfield Opener on Saturday to kick off the 2018-19 season.

THE BASICS

• There was no team scoring for the event that featured some of the top teams in the Northeast region.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Freshman Trinity Hayes took first place in the 200m (26.85) and registered a fourth place finish in the 60m (8.27). She also ran a leg of the 4x400m relay (4:17.50) that had a first place finish.

• Senior Eleni Grammas (Cranston, RI) notched a second place finish in the 60m (8.04) and was third in the 200m (27.02).

• Junior Emma Landroche (Warwick, RI) was second in the 200m (26.92) and was third in the 60m (8.17). She won the long jump (5.05m) and also ran a leg of the 4x400m relay (4:17.50) that had a first place finish.

• Senior Nicole Grammas (Cranston, RI) recorded a fourth place finish in the 200m (27.22) and was fifth in the 60m (8.31). She also ran a leg of the 4x400 meter relay (4:17.50) that had a first place finish.

• Junior Jacklyn Xavier (Cumberland, RI) posted a sixth place finish in the 60m (8.33) and finished seventh in the 200m (27.84). She also ran a leg of the 4x400mrelay (4:17.50) that had a first place finish.

• Sophomore Alexandria Montagano (Johnston, RI) notched a sixth place finish in the 200m (27.65) and was eighth in the 60m (8.43). She also had a seventh place finish in the high jump (1.50m) and was fourth in the long jump (4.60m).

• Junior Oluwafunmibi Yusuff (Providence, RI) took home first place in the weight throw (15.29m) and was fifth in the shot (10.60m).

• Junior Jamie Dobson (Bradford, RI) placed fifth in the weight throw (13.18m), while freshman Florence Flagbote (Providence, RI) posted an 11th place finish in the same event (8.21m).

WHAT’S NEXT

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host its meet at the Providence Career and Technical Academy on Saturday, Dec. 8 (10 a.m.).

LANDROCHE, HAYES, OLUWAFUNMIBI EARN WEEKLY AWARDS

Rhode Island College junior Emma Landroche (Warwick, RI), freshman Trinity Hayes (Providence, RI) and junior Oluwafunmibi Yusuff (Providence, RI) were recognized by the Little East Conference for their respective performances at the Springfield Invitational on Dec. 1.

Landroche was named the Little East Women’s Indoor Track Runner of the Week. She was second in the 200m (26.92) and was third in the 60m (8.17). She won the long jump (5.05m) and also ran a leg of the 4x400m relay (4:17.50) that had a first place finish.

Hayes was the Little East Women’s Indoor Track Rookie Runner of the Week. She took first place in the 200m (26.85) and registered a fourth place finish in the 60m (8.27). She also ran a leg of the 4x400m relay (4:17.50) that had a first place finish.

Yusuff was the Little East Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week. She took home first place in the weight throw (15.29m) and was fifth in the shot (10.60m).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host its meet at the Providence Career and Technical Academy on Saturday, Dec. 8 (10 a.m.).

SAMPALIS NAMED LEC ROOKIE OF WEEK

Rhode Island College freshman Athena Sampalis (West Greenwich, RI) was named the Little East Women’s Rookie Swimmer of the Week for her performance in the Anchorwomen’s, 114-78, loss at Plymouth State on Dec. 1. It is the second time this season Sampalis has received this honor.

She took first place in the 50-yard backstroke (34.83), was second in the 50-yard freestyle (29.69) and had the lead leg of the second place 400-yard medley relay (5:15.68).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Clark on Saturday, Jan. 12 (1 p.m.).

JWU CLAIMS NEW STANDARD TITLE

A dominant performance led the Johnson & Wales University wrestling team to the team title at the New Standard Invitational, hosted by York College. The fourth-ranked Wildcats had three wrestlers win their weight class with 12 top-five finishes.

Johnson & Wales recorded 154.50 points to best #3 Ithaca by 48 points.

Third-ranked Jay Albis was all business on his way to the 125-pound title. He had two tech falls and a pin before beating No. 4 Fred Mase of Ithaca, 10-4, for the title.

Senior Da’Mani Burns rolled to the title at 149 pounds. He posted four pins, including a pin against second-ranked and 2018 NCAA finalist Brett Kallner in 2:50 during the semifinals. Burns topped fifth-ranked Stanley Bleich, 7-5, during overtime for the championship.

Third-ranked Khamri Thomas started Saturday with a pair of pins at 184 pounds. He beat York’s Frankie Krauss, 4-2, to win the title.
