Field to play volleyball in England

Frank Field has always been well-traveled, and will soon be adding another country to his list of adventures.

The former Coventry and University of Rhode Island volleyball standout was recently offered a scholarship to pursue his Master’s Degree in management at Durham University in England, where he will also be playing for the school’s indoor program.

However, his journey to this opportunity was not quite as linear as one would think.

After wrapping up his collegiate career at URI, Field was in search for a new arena in which to play. After a few months of looking, URI coach Mike Holden encouraged him to try out beach volleyball, where he would frequently help organize tournaments in local RI communities such as Newport.

Field heeded his coach’s advice and quickly fell in love with the new game and atmosphere. Field began to compete in more tournaments, and his new-found beach volleyball career took him to competitions all throughout New England and eventually up and down the east coast.

“I fell in love with it immediately, being able to spend an entire day on the beach playing, tournaments are usually on Saturdays, so getting to hang out with your friends and family on the beach is awesome. You get to compete and get paid for it also, it’s a good time, it’s a nice little community,” said Field.

He then decided to take it one step further and packed his bags and headed out to San Diego, and would begin competing in what is arguably the nation’s top beach volleyball community. After six months in California, he received the call from Durham, which he quickly accepted.

“I had no idea (that I was being recruited), the coach just reached out to me and I thought it was a good opportunity so I pursued it. It’s a nice program, I am still learning about the area but it’s a nice scene over there, a little old-timey, so I’m excited and hoping to learn even more,” said Field, who is hoping to continue to play volleyball, indoor or outdoor, for as long as he can. “I don’t look too far ahead toward the future. When the opportunity came, I said yes, hopefully it will lead to more opportunities and if it does, then I’ll say yes again.”

Although Field will miss the beach volleyball scene, he is excited to continue his indoor career which had been put on hold for the past two years. He is also excited to explore a new continent and submerge himself in the new scenery.

“(Indoor and beach volleyball are) different, they both have their pros and cons, but I love both. I haven’t been able to play indoor volleyball since my final year of college so I am definitely looking forward to getting back into it,” said Field. “I just love exploring, I love learning new cultures, beach volleyball has allowed me to do that. I was able to compete in tournaments from all over the country, I played in a tournament in Mexico earlier this year, now it’s bringing me to Europe and I get to explore another new place.”
