Barrington Books Retold in Cranston’s Garden City Center will welcome Shannon Watts, an author and founder of the group Moms Demand Action, for a talk and book-signing event on Friday, Sept. 20, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Watts is appearing in support of her new book, “Fight Like a Mother: How a Grassroots Movement Took on the Gun Lobby and Why Women Will Change the World.”
Tickets for the event cost $10, which will be applied to the cost of the book. Tickets can be obtained via Eventbrite or by calling Barrington Books at 432-7222.
“Fight Like a Mother” is the inspiring story of how one mom's urgent mission to protect children and end gun violence became a movement supported by millions.
On the morning of Dec. 14, 2012, Shannon Watts was folding laundry when news broke about a deadly shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. Outraged, heartbroken and overwhelmed by a need to act, she discovered there was no gun violence prevention equivalent to Mothers Against Drunk Driving. So the stay-at-home mother of five founded Moms Demand Action, a grassroots effort that has grown into a national organization with millions of supporters and local chapters in all 50 states.
“Shannon is an inspiration to every mom fighting to build a better, safer country for our kids. Her story reminds us that, together, we can be a powerful force for change – and that you should never underestimate a mom's ability to get things done,” Gov. Gina Raimondo said.
Watts will donate a majority of the book’s proceeds to nonprofits – like Everytown for Gun Safety – that are working to end gun violence.
In addition to her work with Moms Demand Action, Watts is an active board member of Emerge America, one of the nation’s leading organizations for recruiting and training women to run for office. In 2018, she was named one of InStyle Magazine's Badass Women and one of People Magazine’s 25 Women Changing the World. She is also a Yerba Buena Center for the Arts 100 Honoree.
Watts' writing has appeared in Vogue, Refinery 29, Time, The Washington Post, The Hill, and other media outlets.
