Florio captures girls' golf state crown

Posted

After being in contention the last two seasons, Cranston West junior Alexis Florio clinched her first Rhode Island Interscholastic League girls’ golf state championship at Newport Country Club on Tuesday.

Florio entered as the top qualifier, and she didn’t disappoint, carding a 79 (+7) to hold off second-place Addy Douglas (83) of Prout by four strokes.

Florio held a two-shot lead over Douglas after the front nine, as Florio recorded five bogies, two birdies and two pars to shoot a 39 (+3) through the first nine holes.

She would stretch that lead by two shots on the back nine, playing solid golf with six pars to put the pressure on the field. That was more than enough to capture the state crown.

Florio’s front nine was highlighted by a birdie on the reachable par-4 third, as she placed her drive within 10 feet of the flag stick before two-putting for an easy birdie.

On the back nine, Florio put together three straight pars on 12, 13 and 14 after a double bogey on 11 to set her round back on track.

Florio is just the second girls’ golfer in Cranston West history to capture a state championship, as Patricia Vaccola won back-to-back titles in 1971 and 1972. Florio will have the opportunity to post that same accomplishment when she returns for her senior season next spring.
