On Saturday, May 25, a local shop owner in Pawtuxet Village and her daughter will be holding a fundraiser to benefit two local women with cancer.

The event, called the “Crush Cancer Fundraiser,” is being organized by Tag Sale Treasures owner Amy Conn and her daughter Hannah. It will raise funds for Hannah’s two friends, Samantha Gervais and Lynette Jourdan.

According to Hannah Conn, she was told by both Gervais and Jourdan in April that they were diagnosed with cancer. She added that Gervais is battling breast cancer and Jourdan is battling stage-four cervical cancer.

Conn said both women receive chemotherapy. According to Jourdan, since she has cervical cancer along with the disease spreading to her pelvic area, she receives radiation treatment Monday through Friday and gets both chemotherapy and radiation on Thursdays.

“It’s unfortunately very common that people who are diagnosed with serious illnesses will struggle with paying both their home bills as well as for their treatments,” Conn said. “To try and help them, I immediately went to my mom for help. I didn’t know where to start, but she’s thrown fundraisers before for baby Sean’s family.”

In previous months, her mom held fundraisers to raise money for a local infant, Sean Seigel, who was battling a rare form of leukemia.

According to her daughter, there will be “a few different vendors” who will be helping out with the event. She mentioned that there will be tarot card readings, a popcorn stand, a bake sale and a raffle, just like at the previous fundraiser. She added that local musician Jake Hunsinger will be performing outside as well.

Donations have already been made to funds such as the raffle and for both Gervais and Jourdan, Conn said. She said that donations made include tickets for the zoo, artwork created by Warren Joseph, and “several” gift certificates from places such as Tropical Smoothie and United Ink Tattoos. Conn added that donations have been made by local residents as well.

“So far, everything has been super positive,” Conn said.

The event is being held this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is being held at Tag Sale Treasures, located at 2154 Broad St. in Cranston.
