The Cranston Auburn Post 20, Gershkoff Auto Body baseball team went to McCarthy Field on Monday evening and drubbed Riverside, Collette Post 10 Travel by a final score of 14-4 in six innings during the 2019 American Legion Final Four playoffs.

Andrew Clesas tossed five shutout innings for Auburn Post 20 on only 50 pitches, and gave up just two hits while striking out five with no walks.

The Gershkoff offense was headed by Seth Daly, who finished with two hits and three RBI, and Thomas Barbieri, who added two hits, two walks, plus two RBI, with three runs scored.

The Auburn Post 20 bats got right to work in the top of the first inning as Evan Degaitas and Caleb Harris led off with a pair of singles before Barbieri earned a walk and loaded the bases.

Next, Massimo Feroce belted a sacrifice fly to deep center field and drove in Degaitas and gave Gershkoff a 1-0 lead.

Then, Daly crushed a two-run double to deep right field and brought home both Harris and Barbieri and extended the Auburn Post 20 advantage to 3-0.

In the second inning, Gershkoff extended its lead to 5-0 when Barbieri ripped a two-run single at the Collette Post 10 shortstop, Braydon Dolbashian, who got a glove on the ball before it popped out and sailed into shallow right-center field, and that allowed both Evan Smith and Degaitas to score.

In the fifth frame, Auburn Post 20’s Andrew Spirito worked a bases-loaded walk, which scored Harris, and upped the Gershkoff buffer to 6-0.

Next, Daly socked an RBI single through the middle and brought in Barbieri from third base and extended the Auburn Post 20 lead to 7-0.

Feroce extended the Gershkoff lead to 8-0 moments later when he came home from third base following a passed ball.

After that, Noah Cook ripped a shot at the shortstop, who made an error, and that let Spirito score from third base and it put Auburn Post 20 up 9-0.

Gershkoff upped its advantage to 10-0 during the sixth frame, after Spirito belted an RBI single up the middle and drove in Barbieri from second base.

Then, Cook drew a bases-loaded walk, which scored Feroce and upped the Auburn Post 20 cushion to 11-0.

Next, with the bases reloaded, Smith socked a shot at the Collette Post 10 third baseman, Cam Wilson, who made an error, and that allowed Spirito to score from third base, increasing the Auburn Post 20 margin to 12-0.

Then, with the bases still jammed, Degaitas socked the ball at Wilson again, and again the third baseman made an error, which allowed two more runs to score in Cook and Matt Carvalho, and that expanded the Auburn Post 20 buffer to 14-0.

Collette Post 10 mustered up four runs during the bottom of the sixth inning, when Gershkoff’s Dante DeFalco came on to pitch in relief of Clesas.

Collette Post 10 filled the bases after Julian Reis led off with a double, Josh Silveira reached base on an error, and Wilson walked.

Then, with none out, Dolbashian rocketed a shot at the third baseman, Spirito, who made his second error of the inning, and that scored both Reis and Silveira and inched Collette Post 10 within 14-2.

After that, both Wilson and Latrell Lopez scored during passing balls and got Collette Post 10 within 14-4.

Overall, Auburn Post 20 manager David Schiappa was happy with his team’s first round performance.

“We had 10 hits, so I’m very happy,” Schiappa said. “Happy hitting the ball going into tomorrow. The most important part is to make sure you play good defense. We have our pitching lined up, so we’ll see what happens.”

Auburn Post 20 faced off against Upper Deck Post 14 on Tuesday night in Game 4 of the Final Four, but the score was unavailable at press time.
