Bolts fall to Hawks

The Bishop Hendricken football team continued to cruise this regular season, topping visiting Cranston East 43-7 last Friday night.

The last-place Bolts tested the Hawks in the early going but were unable to keep up in the second half as Hendricken caught fire and put up 21 points in the third quarter to put away the win.

Up 15-0 with less than two minutes to play in the first half, the game’s turning point came when Hendricken’s Angel Sanchez broke off a highlight-reel, 70-yard run to put the Hawks up 22-0 at the break.

Hendricken would hold on to the momentum in the second half. The Hendricken offense marched down the field with ease in the opening drive, which was capped off with a 32-yard touchdown reception from Teighan Jeremy just 31 seconds into play. Nate Reid would then return a Cranston East fumble the distance on the ensuing drive, and the Hawks would go up 36-0 just 53 seconds into the second half.

The Thunderbolts would finally get on the board midway through the third quarter when they returned a botched Hendricken snap for a touchdown to cut the lead to 36-7.

The Hawks would go on to add one more touchdown, this time on a 25-yard run from Isaiah Emmanuel to make it 43-7 heading into the final frame.

The two clubs would turn to their subs in the final 12 minutes. The teams went scoreless as the Hawks secured the victory.

The East defense was solid in the opening minutes in the first quarter, shutting down the Hawks offense and forcing it to punt.

Hendricken gained some traction late in the quarter when Andres Andujar hauled in a 53-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tom Comella with 4:36 left on the clock. Noah Dogon went on to score on an 18-yard run the next Hendricken drive to put the Hawks up 15-0 after one quarter of action. Andrew Nolan connected with David Lynch on the 2-point PAT.

The Hawks improved to 4-0 on the season and remain in first place in Division I. The Thunderbolts dropped to 0-4 on the season with the loss.

The Hawks will hit the road to take on East Providence on Friday night for a 7 p.m. tilt. Cranston East will celebrate its homecoming game this Friday then it hosts Cumberland at Cranston Stadium at 7 p.m.
