Hire on basis of ability, experience

To the Editor:

The page two article in the Providence Journal of March 21, titled “State police’s no-bid contract with firm called problematic” is certainly a problem; both for the content or the story and its placement, nicely hidden on page two instead of page one. It is absolutely outrageous that Socialist policies of Governor Raimondo are now deeply infiltrating the Rhode Island State Police. Paying taxpayer money to the tune of $225,000 for a non-bid contract with a Chicago, of all places, based vendor is pure malfeasance. In addition it is the essence of stupidity! However stupidity does not stop there.

Supposedly the vendor is being selected to assist the State Police “to identify strategies to increase diversity in the agency’s ranks.” If this was really needed and there was nobody capable in the vast state bureaucracy, then I think an Eagle Scout could manage the job for $10,000. But is the study really needed? I think not! The problem, as described, is that we cannot seem to attract sufficient minority applicants from the Black and Hispanic communities and in spite of the fact that under state law and policy, all are welcome to apply.

Now why is there a lack of applicants? Could it be a lack of interest, motivation, or the result of self-evaluation?  It is puzzling that Rhode Island’s high unemployment picture has not generated a flood of applicants. Or is the real answer that there is no shortage of applicants and they just happen to be the “wrong” people? Whose fault is that? The answer is not hard; if you don’t apply you will never get to fly.

The article states that a “2015 study showed Black and Hispanic police officers make up 13 percent of the 3,108 law enforcement positions in Rhode Island, while children of color comprise nearly 40 percent of the state’s youth population.

So what?

When does this adolescent population matriculate to adulthood? Will they by that time have the education required for the job of a State Policeman? Or does the Socialist system insist such requirements be discarded in the interest of hastening diversity?

There is another matter that cannot be overlooked. I suspect the Sanctuary City policies of Providence and other Rhode Island communities has resulted in a large portion of the above cited 40 percent youth population of Blacks and Hispanics, is in fact comprised of illegal aliens. So, the state would let an underage bunch of lawbreakers, abetted by elected lawbreakers, dictate that the State Police be comprised of non-citizens. It is reminiscent of Obama’s destructive actions against the military.

It is high time to discard diversity policies that only add to divisiveness and let all citizens of all colors apply and be hired not on the basis of their color or ethnic background but solely on their ability and experience.
