Kids get in the groove during Fiddle N' Fun program at library

Posted

On Thursday, July 25, nearly two-dozen elementary school children had the chance to channel their inner musician at the William Hall Library.

Joel Beauchemin from Fiddle N’ Fun brought along egg shakers, sound sticks, a giant parachute and homemade fiddlesticks to help encourage the musical interaction. He is a former public school music instructor turned private teacher and performer.

His opening song taught the children how to say “hello” in a variety of languages. He played the guitar and foot tambourine while the children used egg shakers to follow along to the rhythm.

Beauchemin performed interactive songs to get the children up and moving around. He gave the children instruments to play along with him. His songs included “I Chased a Bear,” “Five Little Funky Monkeys” and his version of “Little Bunny Foo-Foo,” as well as an original song he wrote called “Jed Jones Hound Dog.”

The children learned how to make the mosquito face and to do the blast-off dance. There were boom whackers and a giant parachute bounce with inflatable planets.

As the last portion of the program, Beauchemin passed out homemade “fiddlestix” to each child. They are colored wooden spoons made to resemble, and be played like, a violin.

Former music teacher Aurora Spadea Curran created and designed the original “fiddlestix” as a way to introduce the violin to young students.

The children learned how to hold the instruments correctly, as well as some basic fingering positions and techniques.
