Lane shifts upcoming on I-295 north

Posted

On Friday, Aug. 9, at 9 p.m., motorists will experience temporary lane and exit closures as the Rhode Island Department of Transportation shifts traffic to the right on I-295 north, from Scituate Avenue to Hartford Avenue, in Johnston. The new traffic pattern should be in place by 6 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10.

This I-295 north lane shift is part of the second phase of this $42.6 million construction project to rehabilitate bridges that carry I-295 at its interchange with Routes 6 and 6A (exit 9). A similar lane shift on I-295 south is expected to be implemented in early September.

New changes in the traffic pattern for I-295 north are as follows; full closure information is available on RIDOT’s website at ridot.net/295bridges:

• Closure of the northbound through lanes. Through traffic will utilize the new bridges on the service road.

• Access will be maintained for ramps to Route 6 east to Providence (exit 9A) and Route 6 west toward Hartford, Connecticut. (exit 9C).

• Exit 9B to I-295 south will remain closed. Any travelers using it can follow a detour utilizing exit 9C to an on-ramp to I-295 south.

All construction projects are subject to changes in schedule and scope depending on needs, circumstances, findings, and weather.

The I-295 Bridges Contract 2 project was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
