Latino Public Radio (LPR), a non-profit public radio station based in Providence, has announced the resignation of President Dr. Pablo Rodriguez and will cease broadcasting on March 31.
The decision comes after Rodriguez decided to leave LPR to pursue personal interests. LPR began airing in 2005 and has been a resource that has promoted the values of the Rhode Island Latino community and has encouraged civic engagement.
“We should all be proud of the historic role Latino Public Radio has had in the social and political growth of the Latino community,” Rodriguez said. “Rhode Island would be a different place had it not been for the timely news, analysis and information that characterized our broadcast. Going off the air is a great loss for our state.”
According to a press release, the decision was made in part due to “fiscal realities” and LPR’s plans to restructure. They previously broadcast on 1290 AM.
According to station manager Reynaldo Almonte, LPR will continue as a website despite not being on the air any longer and will still produce online audio content.
