Local restaurant hidden gems

As we eagerly await the reopening of our favorite restaurants, still enjoying take-out at many of them, I thought about my favorite hidden gems that bring me back for more.

The obvious favorites include the baked stuffed shrimp at Twin Oaks, the spaghetti and meatballs at Marchetti’s and the chowder and clamcakes at Iggy’s.

Joyce and I would also like to share some of our “hidden gems.”

Governor Francis, Warwick: Home cooked meals are enhanced with their carrots and turnips side, just like mom used to make.

J.P. Spoonems, Cranston: The best homemade corned beef hash led to an equally delicious salmon hash.

Gregg’s, Warwick: Sure, they are famous for their desserts, but have you tried their French meat pies?

R/evolution, Cranston: You will never find a BLT with more bacon than Revolution.

Firehouse Subs, Cranston: People rave about their meatball sub, but our favorite is the braised beef sub.

O’Rourkes, Warwick: The popular pub has a nachos dish made with potato chips that can’t be topped.

Dave’s Pub, Warwick: Like meatloaf, there are dozens of ways to make potato salad. Dave’s has everything but the kitchen sink in their version. And is it good!

Lemongrass, Warwick: Everything is great at one of our favorite restaurants. Located way down at the bottom of the menu is crispy pork, which is just what it says – crispy pork, with a few finely cut veggies and a sauce that is unparalleled.

Vivaldi’s, Cranston: The Edgewood neighborhood restaurant is known for their pizza and grinders, but we love their gyros on pita bread.

Poco Loco, Cranston: Famous for their tacos, burritos and traditional Mexican fare, they occasionally serve the best shrimp po’ boys in the state.

Mirabella’s, Warwick: Famous for their meatballs, they also serve a prepared shepherd’s pie that is loaded with meat, corn and mashed potato.

Rigatoni’s, Warwick: The popular Italian restaurant has great pizza and pasta dishes, but their calamari capri appetizer is a meal in itself.

We’ll go out of the area, all the way to the Cornerstone Pub in Exeter for the best potato skin appetizer in the state, stuffed with creamy mashed potato.
