Oaklawn Library celebrates CPL's 50th anniversary in style

Posted

Continuing the year-long celebration of the Cranston Public Library's 50th anniversary, Oaklawn Branch opened its doors and hearts to the community for a full day of activities, speakers and fun.

Branch Librarian Stefanie Blankenship worked diligently for months to ensure that her patrons had a special day.

She arranged for a face painter, Rising Sun Jiu-Jistu demonstration, raffles, scavenger hunt, speakers on the history of the Oaklawn neighborhood and a special presentation by Ocean State Paranormal about the haunted history of Oaklawn Library.

"I'm very appreciative of my staff and volunteers,” said Blankenship. “They were supportive of the event and helped with so much before, during, and after. I'm grateful for those who donated their time including Dean Watts from Rising Sun Jiu Jistu, Jennifer Rolfsema from Creative Chica, my local historians who presented including Scott Lewis, Andy Hall and Jim Moriarty. And to Buddy Thayer from Ocean State Paranormal. There was something for everyone and all ages. I'm amazed at the turnout. I am thankful for our patrons. They keep us going. And thanks to the generous donations from local businesses and patrons.”

Blankenship was especially appreciative of all the local businesses and even her patrons who donated for the raffle prizes, including Cafe International gift cards, Deluise Bakery gift card, Bobby Gasbarro's Liquor gift certificate, Paper Moon Invitations gift basket, Avon gift basket Scentsy gift basket, Rising Sun Jiu Jitsu certificate for classes, True Reflections Dance and Fitness certificate, Art prize from Creative Chica Fingerless knit gloves by Kathy Turcotte, handmade yoga mat carrier and yoga mat from Lucinda Cory and books from Tom Mellor and Harry Finklestein.

The Knightsville Branch will wrap up the year-long celebration with their open house in November.
