Rodgers and Hammerstein’s great American classic “Oklahoma!” bursts onto the Cranston West Alumni Theater stage from Dec. 6-8.

This groundbreaking musical was Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration and in many ways their most innovative, having set standards for musical theatre that are still being followed today.

On a beautiful morning in 1906 in Oklahoma Territory, a group of intrepid pioneers are setting out to forge a new community, and young women and men are setting out to chart their futures.

The high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys living in Western Indian Territory at the turn of the 20th century provides the colorful setting as Curly, the confident cowboy, and Laurey, the beautiful, headstrong farm girl, play out their love story.

Throw in a fierce rival vying for Laurey’s attention, one flirtatious fiancée, a reluctant suitor, magnificent choreography and one of the most beautiful musical scores ever written, and you have a recipe for a memorable time.

The lively musical features timeless classics such as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey with the Fringe On Top,” “I Cain’t Say No,” “People Will Say We’re in Love” and, of course, the triumphant “Oklahoma!”

Led by theater teacher and director Nancy Vitulli, the award-winning Cranston West Theater Program prepares students who plan to further study or work in theater arts, as well as to develop the confidence, poise, articulate communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking and reflective strategies required to become productive members of society. In a theater classroom or production environment, all students are encouraged to develop a lifelong appreciation for theatre arts.

All general admission tickets cost $12. To purchase or reserve tickets, visit chsw-theater.weebly.com under the ticket sales tab.
