GCC set to host New Year's Day golf tourney

Like its unique co-sponsors, the New Year’s Day Polar Golf Tournament is unmatched on Rhode Island’s sports calendar.

For example, when golfers tee off at 10 o’clock on January 1, 2019 at picturesque Glocester Country Club, they’ll only need three clubs to play three holes.

Moreover, each golfer is asked to solicit a $10 sponsorship from friends, families or businesses that has been donated for four successive years to the Hematology-Oncology Units at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence.

There are several other suggestions, as Chairwoman Judi Graham calls them, that players wear T-shirts and shorts or bundle up in case of inclement or cold weather.

As for the entry fee, its only $20 per golfer that is made payable to the JMCE – highly-acclaimed Johnston Memorial Cancer Events – that in the past 11 years has raised $180,000 to help kids fighting cancer at the nationally-famous Providence-based hospital.

There’s yet another interesting side to the New Year’s Day Polar Golf Tournament, as that is, Graham wanted it known everywhere, “The public is invited and we always welcome any and all donations that will help children who have unfortunately been stricken with cancer.”

Even if you’re not a golfer, Gloucester Country club - which was founded back in 1929 on land adjacent to famed Waterman Lake – and the JMCE encourages people to stop by the club located at 121 Wentworth Street off Route 44 and make a donation or two and enjoy the fun and fellowship that have become the annual tournament’s trademarks.

The 2019 New Year’s Day Polar Golf Tournament will tee off for the fifth time in as many years and Graham – as well as Glocester Country Club’s management/Board of Directors that headed by President Dewey Uriati along with the extraordinary small group of close-knit friends who make up the JMCE - are hoping for a record-setting event.

“Participation in our (New Year’s Day) tournament keeps increasing every year,” Graham, who actually founded the tourney and is a GCC member as well as the JMCE Board of Directors, noted. “The fun also gets better with each and every Polar Golf event.”

Likewise, the New Year’s Day Polar Golf Tournament will be the first of many events in the JMCE which made a pledge to raise $100,000 over a five-year period that will help build a new unit at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and has in three years netted $77,00 toward that golf – will hold in 2019.

“I told Dr. (Rishi R.) Rula we will keep raising money as long as he keeps trying to find a cure for Pediatric Cancer.”

Rula is Chief of Hasbro’s Hematology/Oncology and is well-published in the medical profession and recently touted the JMCE saying, “We obviously appreciate corporate gifts, but we love the ones we received from a community coming together.”

Which is the small, yet extra-large size community known as the JMCE and Glocester Country Club’s membership.

Anyone who’d like to make a donation for the New Year’s Day Polar Golf Tournament or would like to reserve a playing spot or four should call Graham at (401) 497-2954. All checks should be made payable to the JMCE. People are also used to contact Graham at judi@graham-builders.com.
