On May 21, the Cranston Historical Society hosted Col. Ron Barnes of the Pawtuxet Rangers for a presentation at Sprague Mansion.
Coinciding with the start of this year’s Gaspee Days festivities, the presentation focused on the history of the Pawtuxet Rangers and the former earthworks fort at Pawtuxet Neck. The Rangers manned the fort and helped to protect the area during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
Barnes, dressed in the Rangers uniform, showed images of the fort. Its location is today commemorated by a plaque.
The Cranston Historical Society holds its meetings on the third Tuesday of March, May, July, September and November. The meetings are free and open to the public. To learn more, call 944-9226.
