The Cranston West boys’ swim team started its league season on a good note last Wednesday, winning 10 of the 11 events to earn a 53-40 victory over Shea/Tolman.

The Falcons emerged victorious in six of the seven individual events. The lone winner for Shea/Tolman in the meet was Giovanni Soria, who took first in the 50 free in a time of 26 seconds.

But, outside of that race, West was dominant.

David Marcello finished first in both the 100 breaststroke (1:08.79) and the 200 individual medley (2:18.71). Also earning a pair of individual golds was Connor Venagro, who outpaced the competition in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:09.43, before winning the 500 free at 6:04.87. Other individual winners for West were Brad Theis in the 100 free (1:05.43) and Sai Kamsani in the 100 butterfly (2:14.16).

West then went on to sweep the three relay races. The team of Theis, Virak Pond-Tor, Salvatore Orlando and Keevan Winters won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:54.17. That performance was followed by the 200 medley relay, which was won by West’s Venagro, Marcello, Kamsani and Winters in a time of 1:52. And that same group would also stake claim to first in the 400 free relay (4:00.70) to tack on some more points and help West secure the team win.

The West girls’ team also downed the Tolman girls, 60-33, at the same meet to also get out to a 1-0 start.

Tolman took the 50 free in the girls’ meet, with Autumn Grinell earning first, but West would win every other event after that.

The West girls also had two different swimmers win two individual races apiece. Haley McCrystal won the 100 butterfly (1:14.34) and the 500 free (6:20.09), while Rebecca Fyrer won the 200 free (2:37.57) and the 100 backstroke (1:20.21). Pallavi Kamsani (200 IM), Lerita Leung (100 breaststroke) and Madison Guilmette (100 free) were also individual winners for the Falcons.

Like the boys, the West girls also swept the three relays. Emily Manzi, Fyrer, Pallavi Kamsani and McCrystal won the 200 free relay in a time of 2:07.20. Fyrer, Leung, McCrystal and Pallavi Kamsani then kept the momentum going by posting a time of 2:18.04 in the 200 medley relay to place first, before the team of Kamsani, Leung, Manzi and Federica Triosedti closed the meet with a win in the 400 free relay with a time of 5:11.35.

West will continue its Division III slate next Wednesday when it hosts Mount Hope at Park View Middle School at 4:30 p.m.
